Battle of Christmas

The Battle of Christmas, which took place in 1635, was a battle between the Dutch and the Pingpu people in Taiwan Province Province. The main battlefield was in the area north of today's Dagang Mountain. This battle is considered to be the key for the Dutch to establish their sovereignty over Taiwan Province Province.

When the Dutch East India Company came to Taiwan Province Province, 1629, the Madou Society incident happened. The East India Company defeated the Machou Society and signed the Machou Agreement, thus expanding its power here.

The Dutch intend to control the area from Tainan to Kaohsiung. Hans putmans, the fourth chief executive of Dutch-born Taiwan Province, decided to form an alliance with Pingpu Xingang Society and expel Matou Society and Tagliayan Society to facilitate the introduction of immigrants from China.

On February 25th, 65438, they attacked Tagliayan society and burned their village. Garian was defeated and retreated to Pingtung; It's called the Christmas War.

After Christmas, the Pingpu people in Fengshan also signed a peace treaty with the Dutch and accepted Dutch rule. Other Pingpu ethnic groups, such as the continuation society, moved south to Pingtung to avoid disasters, forming the later Fengshan Eight Societies.

The vast plain from Tainan to Kaohsiung is like a vacuum. Since then, the Dutch have successfully introduced immigrants from China and cultivated and consolidated their dominant position in Taiwan Province Province.
