The Origin of Dongfanghong's Name "Dongfanghong"

The name of Type 54 tractor produced by China No.1 Tractor Factory is also very interesting.

According to Comrade Su Yuan, then the first propaganda minister and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Yi Tuo, the first tractor was still being produced at the beginning of 1958. Yi Tuo specially organized engineers to compile a product manual named "D T 54 Tractor" to introduce the performance, use, driving, repair and maintenance of tractor components.

Shortly after the publication of this book, the Yi Tuo factory received an important instruction from President Mao Zedong: "The model and name of tractors cannot be written in foreign languages." So, Yi Tuo began to mobilize all the staff to name the tractor. At the same time, relevant ministries and commissions of the Central Committee and relevant units in Luoyang City were mobilized, and everyone named the tractors produced in New China.

First of all, the Automobile Industry Administration of the First Machinery Department nominated "Iron Bull". After discussion, the Party Committee of Yi Tuo Factory was dissatisfied with this name, and later gave it to the 27 horsepower wheeled tractor produced by Tianjin Tractor Factory.

Later, there were names with local characteristics such as Longmen and Baima in Luoyang, because there are famous cultural relics and historic sites such as Longmen Grottoes and Baima Temple in Luoyang. After the name of "White Horse" was put forward, several workers in Yi Tuo stamping workshop specially designed a "White Horse" nameplate. The white horse in this nameplate faces left and its hooves run hard. However, the names "White Horse" and "Longmen" are not unique to Luoyang, and employees feel that a delay cannot represent a delay.

The next day, An Daoping, then deputy director of the office of Yi Tuo Factory, went to Luoyang City to discuss the naming of tractors. Just when he came back fruitless, he heard someone singing the folk song "Dongfanghong" in the factory: Dongfanghong, the sun is rising, and there is a Mao Zedong in China ... "Dongfanghong"! What a beautiful name! It praised Chairman Mao and New China. As a result, this most special name in the history of Chinese trademarks in the future was immediately recognized by all employees in Yi Tuo, and was quickly approved by the First Machinery Department.

Since then, three striking scarlet letters of "Dongfanghong" have appeared on all tractors made in Yi Tuo. The Type 54 crawler tractor produced in Yi Tuo has finally got a resounding and proud China name.
