Born in Chicago, USA, Martin Cooper comes from a Ukrainian immigrant family. In 1950, he received a master's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

When Martin Cooper was the general manager of Motorola's Communications Systems Division, he was committed to promoting the research and development of mobile phones. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper used their newly developed mobile phone prototype to make a call to a research and development rival at Bell Labs on the streets of Manhattan, New York.
