In nature, the vassal state is essentially different from the counties under the jurisdiction of the imperial court in the past, including the capital of Annan in the Tang Dynasty. In other words, since the Song Dynasty, Yue has become an independent country. Like Korea, Ryukyu and other vassal states, paying tribute to the Central Plains dynasty on time can get China's asylum. In the Yuan Dynasty, Annan, like Japan, successfully resisted the invasion of the Yuan Army. Of course, the Japanese took advantage of the oceans and islands, while the Annamese took advantage of the tropical rain forest climate in Vietnam, which greatly restricted the combat capability of Mongolian soldiers. When Zhu established the Ming Dynasty, Annan's regional dynasty was the "Chen Dynasty", which was originally a tribute to the Ming Dynasty as usual.

However, the rule of Chen Dynasty in Annan was turbulent, and the Ming Dynasty sent troops to suppress the turbulent forces in Annan area. Because the original ruler was scattered, the Ming dynasty wanted to cancel Annan's status as a vassal state. After fierce struggle, Li Li, the hero in Annan's eyes, rose up and defeated the Ming army.
