Why did Americans immigrate to Greece?
The Greek community in Spokane can be traced back at least to 1889. Like immigrants from China and Japan, many early Greek immigrants worked for the railway before settling down and starting their own businesses (that is, cafes). With the development of the Greek community in Spokane, some immigrants, such as John Cacais and James Papanton, helped plan the arrival of a church and a priest. The Greek Orthodox Church began in 1932, which is the product of cafes and a social gathering place to consolidate the Greek tradition.
1959, Father Vilis came here. He continued to cultivate the religious and cultural traditions of the local church, but he also made unremitting efforts to attract people to convert to the Orthodox Church through his philosophical unity, love and understanding. In fact, Willis was quoted as saying, "All citizens are part of my parish." During his 25-year tenure as the holy trinity Greek Orthodox Church, the church gradually included people who converted to Orthodox teachings, as well as Orthodox Christians from Russia, Ukraine, Lebanon and other Eastern European countries.
But the church is not the only one that Vilis serves. He is a member of the American Association for the Promotion of Greek Education, which is dedicated to "promoting Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and personal Excellence". He is also a member of the Spokane Rotary Club, the Masonic Chapter and the Children's Family Association. In addition, Willis also works for several charity committees, such as Union Road and the studio of the Shelter for the Disabled. 1984 after leaving the army, I worked with problem youth.
Before the death of 1992, Father Willis played a role in ensuring the permanent rest of the parishioners. Near the mausoleum by the river, there is an area called "Trinity Lawn", where several Greek-Americans are buried, and there is also a monument in memory of Reverend Willis. Ironically, Vilis and his wife Francis were buried at Mount Oliver Cemetery in Salt Lake City, where he grew up and went to college.
