Should I change my domestic identity card after becoming a full Hong Kong resident?
After investing and immigrating in Hong Kong for seven years, people who have China nationality and become permanent residents of Hong Kong can apply for a Hong Kong passport. According to the Regulations on Household Registration in People's Republic of China (PRC), a natural person can only be registered as a permanent resident in one place. Therefore, strictly speaking, mainland residents should cancel their mainland accounts after obtaining Hong Kong permanent identity cards and Hong Kong passports.
But so far, the SAR Government has not stipulated that applications for "Hong Kong permanent identity cards" or "Hong Kong passports" must be cancelled before they can be processed. Therefore, at this stage, Hong Kong investment immigrants can still choose to keep their mainland accounts, which can be divided into two situations:
1, apply for home visit permit
Home Visit Permit (Hong Kong and Macao Residents' Pass to and from the Mainland) is a document issued by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau in People's Republic of China (PRC) to Hong Kong and Macao residents with China nationality to and from the Mainland. If Hong Kong investment immigrant applicants want to travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland by applying for a "Home Visit Permit" after obtaining a Hong Kong permanent identity card, they need to cancel their household registration in the Mainland.
2. Don't apply for a home visit permit
If the applicant frequently travels between Hong Kong and the Mainland, but does not want to apply for a Home Visit Permit to give up his Mainland account, there are two solutions:
(1) Apply for the Hong Kong and Macao Pass and use it from Hong Kong to the Mainland;
(2) You can go to a third country with a Hong Kong passport, and then go to the mainland from the third country. With a third country as a transit point, you can hold a China passport and a Hong Kong passport at the same time, and you can keep your mainland account.
