In the early Qing Dynasty, during the reign of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong, preferential policies were formulated to encourage immigrants to move to Sichuan. By the forty-first year of Qianlong (1776), more than 6 million immigrants and their descendants from Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guizhou and Shaanxi had moved to Sichuan, accounting for more than 6% of the local population.
