What does Sinclair (1878~1968) mean?
Sinclair (1878-1968) was an American writer who was born on September 20, 1878 in Baltimore, Maryland. His father is a son of a poor and famous family and makes a living by selling liquor. Sinclair grew up in New York and began selling and writing manuscripts at the age of 15. He graduated from City College while working part-time. While studying for graduate studies at Columbia University, he has written six novels and joined the American Socialist Party. In 1906, he published the novel "The Slaughterhouse", which exposed the poor working conditions and tragic fate of immigrant workers. The novel caused an uproar and became a representative work of the progressive reform movement and "muckraking" literature. It was translated into more than 10 languages ??and prompted the government to implement the Food Hygiene Act. Sinclair used royalties to establish an experimental base for social reform, and then ran for the governorship of California four times (all unsuccessfully). He also supported political organizations such as the Industrial Democratic Alliance and became a leader of reform and radical intellectuals in the early 20th century. His works also include "The Coal King", which describes the coal miners' strike in Colorado, "Petroleum", which criticizes the dark kingdom of monopoly capital, and "Boston", which exposes political corruption and police brutality. After the rise of the left-wing cultural movement in the 1930s, Sinclair tended to remain a passive observer. Later, he wrote 11 novels under the general title "The End of the World", which mainly reflected the American society between the two world wars. Among them, "Dragon's Teeth" won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1962, he published the book "Autobiography".
