Historical evolution of the Bahamas

From 300 to 400 AD, there lived a non-Arawa Indian in the Bahamas, who probably immigrated from Cuba. Cai Lu Indians came here later. Neither of the two tribes left a written history, but they left some paintings, pottery and bones.

1492, when Christopher Columbus came to San Salvador Island in the eastern Bahamas, he landed on this new continent for the first time. When he stood on the island and looked around the island, he saw shallow water lapping against the coast, so he said "Bazama" (meaning shallow water or ocean). The name of the Bahamas comes from this, so the Bahamas is also called "the island in the shallow sea". When Columbus arrived in the Bahamas, there were about 40,000 Luckas on the island.

Since Europeans settled in Florida, not far from the Bahamas, they have often crossed the strait by boat. The Bahamas has attracted many explorers, immigrants, intruders and businessmen. Cai Lu Indians were enslaved by European colonists and soon became extinct.

1648, a group of English Puritans who did not agree with the authorities came here to seek freedom of religious belief. The adventurers gave the island a name, but the island didn't give them much in return. The colonists were short of food, lacked stable supplies, and kept fighting among themselves, and finally split up. Part of their community is in the port of Governor Irusela and part is in the missionary cave. In search of peace, Captain William Cyrus, the leader of Iruselah, sailed to American colonies. He successfully obtained supplies from the Massachusetts Gulf colony and then returned to the conflict-ridden island of Irusela.

From the end of 17 to the beginning of 18, it was the golden age of pirates and privateers. Most people have heard the story of Sir Francis Drake and Blackbeard, who used to be based in the Bahamas. The Bahamas is an ideal place for pirates and privateers. Numerous islands and islets are densely covered with sandbars and straits, and the terrain is very complex, which provides excellent hiding places for those looting ships. Moreover, because the Bahamas is close to the busy freight passage, it provides plenty of opportunities for pirates to steal merchant ships.

From 186 1 to 1865, the Bahamas, whose economy alternated between prosperity and depression, benefited a lot from the American Civil War. Britain's textile industry is very dependent on cotton in the southern United States, so it stands on the side of the Southern Confederacy. However, British ships can't reach the southern seaport of the United States because the northern government of the United States implements the coastal blockade policy. However, the clever and cunning speedboat can break through the blockade and sail 560 miles from Charleston to Nassau full of cotton. Here, they met British ships and exchanged cotton for the goods on the British ships. The speedboat then broke through the blockade and returned to Charleston, where it sold the goods at a high price. After the American Civil War, the prosperity of the Bahamas ended, and this situation continued until 19 19. The United States passed the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, forbidding people to drink alcohol, and these islands started smuggling activities again. Scotch whisky is an important product exported by Britain to the Bahamas, so the colonial government expanded the port of George in Nassau to provide berths for a large number of ships trafficking in alcohol. 1934, the United States lifted the prohibition of alcohol, and the business that brought huge income to the Bahamas fell into depression. With the lifting of the ban and the collapse of sponge fishing a few years later, the economy of the Bahamas was seriously damaged.
