On July 1, 1953, Changzhi City was transferred directly under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province. In 1958, Changzhi Prefecture was changed to Shanxi Southeast Prefecture, which took charge of Changzhi City. In 1971, the Southeast Shanxi Special Zone was changed to the Southeast Shanxi Region. In 1975, Changzhi City returned to the direct jurisdiction of Shanxi Province and was divided into urban and suburban districts.
