What is life like after immigrating to Australia?
Young people have a high tolerance for pluralistic society and immigrant culture.
According to the Australian Forum, among Australians of all ages, young people are still the ethnic group with high acceptance and the most positive attitude towards multiculturalism. As many as 9 1% of young respondents agree or strongly agree that multiculturalism is beneficial to Australia, and as many as 85% of young people agree or strongly agree that Australians should know more about immigrant culture.
When asked whether Australia's immigration policy should adopt different attitudes towards different ethnic groups, 87% of young people expressed strong opposition, while only 7 1% of the elderly aged 60 to 69 disagreed. When it comes to the cultural problems of ethnic minorities, the differences between young Australians and middle-aged and elderly people are the most obvious. Nearly two-thirds of the young people aged 18 to 29 think that the government should help ethnic immigrants pass on their own culture, while among middle-aged and elderly people, the support rate of this conclusion has just exceeded 30%.
Melbourne and Canberra lead the capital cities in an inclusive way.
Researchers from the scanlon Foundation have found that people's attitudes towards multiculturalism are also different in Australian capitals. 48% of the respondents in Melbourne and Canberra think that the existence of multiculturalism is a good thing, while only 42% in Sydney, 39% in Adelaide, 37% in Perth and 35% in Brisbane agree with this view, which is the lowest among all provincial capitals.
Are there too few immigrants or too many? Where is the social cohesion going?
According to the analysis of the report, "the survey results show that young Australians have regarded multiculturalism as an important part of Australian life, and there is no contradiction between maintaining immigrant culture as a minority and being a new Australian."
The study also expressed concern about the existing number of immigrants in Australia. In 20 15, the number of immigrants absorbed by Australia was the lowest since 2007. Even so, 35% of the respondents feel that Australia has accepted too many immigrants. Hancox, CEO of scanlon Foundation, said: "Multiculturalism is one of the most distinctive features of Australia. In the era of globalization, we must promptly consider the impact of this change on public attitudes and social cohesion. Australians have always been very accepting of multiculturalism and immigration, but the degree of acceptance varies according to the geographical location and group of Australians. " Hancox also said that the Foundation hopes that this survey can promote the concept of multiculturalism and help Australia to enhance social cohesion.
