Why should the United States be afraid of the rise of China?

Many people’s reaction to China today is very similar to the reaction to Japan in the 1980s, when Japan was an emerging economic challenger to the West.

The worst part is that the political ideology behind China’s economic growth is diametrically opposed to Western ideas about democracy and human rights. China not only competes with the United States in the world market, but also proposes a completely different economic and political system. China is succeeding on ideas that Americans despise.

Many people are worried about China more than that. No one thinks that Japan will pose a military threat to the West or even become a challenger to the world's diplomatic influence.

This is not the case in China at all. China is using its economic clout to increasingly propose alternatives to the U.S.-led political and economic system. Beijing often complains about the dollar's primacy and wants its currency to play a more important international role.

In other words, China seems to challenge not only today’s economic orthodoxy and order, but also the world’s political and military framework. China is not content with selling more TV sets to the world. The Chinese want greater control over the world, and they want to use their economic influence to achieve this.

There are three reasons why the rise of China scares the world:

First, everyone will take the examples of the rise of great powers in history as precedents and as reference numbers. In history, great powers always rise. They bully others, benefit themselves at the expense of others, invade and expand, and I worry that China is no exception.

The second person will use the Soviet Union as a reference for observing China. When the Soviet Union became stronger, it invaded, expanded, and dominated. Third, the rise of China is the rise of almost 1.4 billion people. There is no precedent in history for the rise of 1.4 billion people. The scale is too large, and people will be afraid of it.
