Concept of thrust arch bridge

Concept of thrust arch bridge.

Bridges with arch rings or ribs as the main load-bearing structure. Under the vertical load, the arch ring of the arch bridge is mainly compressed, and the pier supporting the arch ring bears both vertical force and horizontal thrust, which is called thrust arch bridge. If a rod is connected between the two ends of the arch ring to bear the horizontal thrust of the arch, and the pier only bears the vertical force, it is called a thrust-free arch bridge, commonly known as a tied arch bridge.
