Steps to acquire nationality

1. Submit naturalization application and materials.

The application for nationality can only be handled at the entry-exit administration office that handles nationality business. When submitting the application materials, you should go to the entry-exit administration office where your household registration is located with your Korean spouse.

2. Naturalization application qualification survey and interview

After the application, you usually have to go through materials, field visits and interviews for more than 1 year.

Two to four weeks before the interview review date, the notice will be sent to the applicant. If the address changes after the application, the change of residence shall be reported to the entry-exit administration office.

Marriage immigration, no written test, only interview. The focus of the interview review is on Korean proficiency and the basic conditions that Korean nationals must have.

When the first interview fails, you can also accept the second interview review.

3. Naturalization permit

After receiving the notification of naturalization permission from the Minister of Justice, you must submit the registration of family relations, renunciation of foreign nationality, resident registration and foreigner registration certificate.

4. Family relationship registration statement

Within one month after receiving the notice of naturalization license, you should personally go to the family relationship registration department (urban government or municipal office) recorded in the notice to register and declare the family relationship.

When registering a family relationship, you must bring a notice of naturalization permit and a foreigner's landing permit.

5. renunciation of foreign nationality

Within 6 months after receiving the notification of naturalization permission, you should declare your renunciation of nationality to the embassy or consulate of the original country of nationality, and then directly submit the certificate of renunciation of foreign nationality to the nationality director of the entry-exit administration office, and then receive the confirmation of renunciation of foreign nationality.

If you don't get the certificate of renunciation of foreign nationality during this period, your application for Korean nationality will be automatically cancelled.

If South Korea does not have an embassy of the relevant country or the relevant laws of that country prevent it from obtaining the certificate of renunciation of foreign nationality, it shall submit a memorandum of renunciation of foreign nationality to the entry-exit administration. And get the foreign nationality to give up the reservation confirmation, and then declare the resident registration.

6. Resident registration

With the notice of naturalization permit, the transcript of household registration, and the confirmation of renunciation of foreign nationality, go to the Yidong office in the area of residence to register and declare residents, and then issue the resident registration certificate.

7. Return the foreigner's registration card

Within/0/4 days after the issuance of the resident registration certificate, bring the Notice of Naturalization, the Certificate of Kinship, the Resident Registration Certificate and the Alien Registration Certificate to the Exit-Entry Administration Office in your jurisdiction and return the Alien Registration Certificate.
