In the first sense, taking English as the national language means taking English as the official language.

In the second sense, English is a unique language in Britain. English evolved from the language spoken by the Germanic people of Anglo-Saxon and Jute tribes who immigrated to the British Isles from northern Europe and Scandinavia in ancient times, and spread to all parts of the world through the active exchanges of British colonists.
