This is another classic American dream. Irish immigrants Johnny (Patty Concetti) and Sarah (samantha morton) come to the United States with their two daughters. When they walked in the streets full of strange and fresh sounds in Manhattan, new york, they began an adventurous life. A dazzling future awaits this family, but they must first forget the past.

Johnny and Sarah soon discovered that America is not a golden continent full of opportunities. The family had to live in a cheap apartment in new york because of lack of money. The apartment is as shabby as a horror movie scene, and the people living in it are all kinds of addicts or transvestites. Previous savings were spent on food, rent, gas and water. From dragging an air conditioner across Manhattan to finding a decent job, the tangled couple feel that America is full of challenges, eccentricities and dangers. However, their two daughters think that America is a magical place, a place where everything will happen and a place where they can get rid of the pain of the past. But Johnny and Sarah are still immersed in the grief of their beloved son's death in Ireland. They find that their relationship seems to be more tense due to the pressure of hard life in new york.

One Halloween, Christie and Ai Lier sisters plucked up the courage to knock on the door of their mysterious neighbor Martio (djimon hounsou) downstairs. Martio is an eccentric Nigerian painter. His angry screams often echoed in the stairwell, but this time he was unexpectedly kind to the sisters. Everything has changed since then.

Sarah invited Martio to dinner, and Martio quickly integrated into the family. Gradually Johnny began to suspect that his wife might have something to do with the man downstairs.
