Xiaoxi in Hunan Province is a provincial nature reserve approved by the provincial people's government 1982. It borders Yuanling County in Hunan Province in the east, Guzhang County in Hunan Province in the south, Changguan Township in Yongshun County in the west and Huilong Township and Langxi Township in Yongshun County in the north, with a total area of 26,347.6 hectares. It belongs to the national nature reserve of forest ecology and wildlife type, with 24,290.8 hectares of woodland, accounting for the total area. 2001June 16 was promoted as a national nature reserve with the approval of the State Council. In order to strengthen the management of protected areas, the Xiaoxi National Nature Reserve Administration of Hunan Province was established with the approval of Xiangxi People's Government in March 2003. The administrative level is a deputy division level unit, and its main responsibility is to implement unified management of resource and environmental protection and rational development and utilization of protected areas. The Administration and Xiaoxi Township People's Government are co-located, implementing a set of people and two brands, which are directly under the management of Yongshun County People's Government, and accept the guidance of the superior forestry department in business; There are 60 people in the reserve management bureau, which consists of four departments, one room and five stations, namely, Resource Protection Department, Scientific Research Department, Publicity and Education Department, Planning and Finance Department, Office, Xiaoxi Management and Protection Station, Huilong Management and Protection Station, Zhenxi Management and Protection Station, Mao Ping Checkpoint, Twelve Bay Checkpoint and Xiaoxi Police Station.

The nature reserve is located at the junction of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, northwest Wuling Mountain and western Hubei Mountain, and belongs to Zhongshan landform. It is mainly composed of Rentou Mountain in Wuling Mountain, with 39 peaks above 1000 meters above sea level. Most of the mountains are north-south, and the terrain is irregular "book" shape with three sides high in the east, west and north and low in the south. The highest altitude is Rentoushan 13438+0 meters. The relative height difference is 1 164.5m, and the valley is mostly V-shaped, with small openness. The slope below 800m is steep, and the slope is greater than 35. It is the main distribution area of primary and secondary forests of evergreen broad-leaved forest. Above 800m, it has the characteristics of mountainous landform and gentle slope, and is the main place for local farmers to farm and live. The strata are Proterozoic Banxi Group and Sinian System. The bedrock mainly includes slate and sandstone.

The nature reserve belongs to subtropical humid monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of 12- 14℃. With an elevation of 100 m, the annual average temperature drops by 0.5-0.68℃, and the annual active accumulated temperature ≥ 10℃ is 5196. The frost-free period in mountainous areas above 800 meters above sea level is 262 days, and below 800 meters above sea level is 290 days.

The vertical band spectrum distribution of soil is obvious, with red soil below 400 meters above sea level, yellow red soil at 400-500 meters above sea level, mountain yellow soil at 500-800 meters above sea level and mountain yellow brown soil at 800 meters above sea level. The soil is deep, fertile and acidic, with a PH value of 5-6, which is suitable for the growth of many plants.

The nature reserve has high mountains and deep valleys, and rivers crisscross. There are mainly small streams, Yuquan stream, Chayuan stream, Daming stream and Cunninghamia lanceolata stream, which are brown and run through the whole territory. The water system flows into Yuanjiang River from north to south, which has the characteristics of large runoff, no freezing in winter and excellent water quality. It is the main water source for local residents' production and life. Seasonal precipitation is the main source of river water in this area. Due to the uneven distribution of precipitation, the river water level changes greatly in a year. The highest water level usually appears in April-July, during which there are frequent rainstorms, and after July, there is less precipitation, the minimum river flow and the lowest water level, which is the dry season.

The vegetation in this nature reserve belongs to the pan-Arctic flora and is the central part of the Sino-Japanese forest plant subregion. There are many kinds of plants. According to many years' investigation and many times' investigation by experts and professors from many universities and scientific research units, there are 2702 species of plants in this area, belonging to 974 genera of 222 families, including 7 species of Davidia involucrata, Davidia involucrata, Taxus chinensis, Taxus mairei, Bole Tree and Ginkgo biloba, among which 7 species of Cryptomeria fortunei, Toona sinensis and Phoebe bournei are national first-class protected trees. At the same time, the flora is complex, with 13 geographical distribution types, including 3 vegetation types, 8 vegetation types and 3 1 formation (cluster). And the vertical distribution of vegetation is obvious, with evergreen broad-leaved forest belt below 800 meters above sea level and evergreen deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest belt above 800 meters above sea level.

Professor Wu Zhengyi, an expert from China Academy of Sciences, believes that Xiaoxi is the only natural resource treasure house and plant resource gene bank of evergreen broad Ye Yuan secondary forest that survived the Quaternary glacier attack at subtropical low altitude in 13 provinces in central and southern China.

The flora of the reserve is ancient, complete, remnant and unique, with many families and genera, single species and few species, which is typical in the flora of Central China. Such as Davidia involucrata and Davidia involucrata of Davidiaceae, Davidia involucrata of Celastraceae, Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. of Eucommiaceae, and relict plant ancient ginkgo biloba. There are 39 endemic genera, 2 1 endemic plants and 1 newly discovered species in China.
