Brief introduction of Yaowan ancient town in Xinyi

Yaowan ancient town has been formed for more than 2000 years. It is located at the intersection of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Lake Rome. Frequent mountain torrents carry a lot of sediment and become the best material for firing pottery, so firing bricks and tiles with clay has become an important means for local people to make a living. Located at the corner of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, it is named Yaowan.

The land here is fertile, rich in products, developed in commerce and prosperous in economy. Guzhen District is surrounded by water on three sides and faces the land on one side, and is located at the junction of Xinyi, Pizhou, Suining and Suyu counties. Therefore, there is a description of "the cock crows in the four counties", "looking at the sea in the east, Huaisi in the south, Pengcheng in the west and Taidai in the north". The Grand Canal flows through the town, and the river is about 500 meters wide. Hundreds of years ago, ships shuttled on the canal channel, which is the main channel of the country. As a land and water terminal with such a geographical location, its once prosperity can be imagined. As early as the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, it was known as the "little shanghai" in northern Jiangsu.

The ancient town of Yaowan is surrounded by tall gates and numerous forts, and a street building is built every 50 meters. The wall is deep and difficult to cross, and the defense is tight and impregnable. The Catholic Church and Yan Jia Mansion are majestic and towering, which are the landmark buildings of Yaowan.

In the town, there are eight guilds, thirteen money houses, two foreign companies, as well as Catholic churches, Jesus churches and eighteen temples. Cultural and public welfare facilities include five primary schools, two middle schools and seven hospitals, as well as stadiums, martial arts venues, May 4th Park, bookstores and theaters.

The mung bean soju, tea fruit, sweet oil and Osmanthus Jelly in Yaowan are exported to all parts of the country, and the whitebait and shrimp in Roman Lake are even more famous.
