Chongming Island has four ancient towns.

The four ancient towns in Chongming Island include Qiaozhen, Miao Zhen, Baozhen and Xianghua Town. These ancient towns have a long history and rich culture and characteristics. Qiaozhen Town was formed by irrigation and water conservancy, and Miao Zhen residents made a living by shipping. In the Ming Dynasty, Baozhen built castles to defend against Japanese pirates, and Xianghua Town was named after the imperial examination. The unique history and characteristics of these ancient towns together constitute the unique cultural landscape of Chongming Island.
