But what is the connection between Fengyang Flower Drum and Zhu Yuanzhang? There is a legendary story, starting from the beginning.

Entering Nanjing as a gift

It turns out that Zhu Yuanzhang did not like entertainment in his life, but preferred to listen to flower drums. When he was young, his family farmed in Taiping Township, Fengyang. People in Taiping Township often played flower drums and sang flower drum songs. Whenever Zhu Yuanzhang saw someone playing flower drums, he would follow them and sing flower drum songs. When herding cattle, he would often sing a few lines himself.

Later, Zhu Yuanzhang became the emperor and held a grand enthronement ceremony in Nanjing. The emperor's ascension to the throne was of course a great joy. Ministers of civil and military affairs must prepare gifts and go to congratulate them. This incident spread to his hometown-Fengyang Taiping Township. If an emperor is born in my hometown, that's a big deal! Many people discussed together: "Emperor Zhu is our fellow countryman. He has ascended the throne and is sitting in the palace. He must prepare some gifts to celebrate." One person suggested, everyone agreed, and the matter was settled. But what gift should I bring? Some people wanted to buy some silk and grosgrain as gifts, some wanted to buy some gold and silver jewelry as gifts, and some wanted to collect some local gifts such as sesame seeds and peanuts, but they were all rejected. Everyone said, "Now that I have become an emperor, do I still lack those things? Silk and satin, gold and silver jewelry, sesame and peanuts, local products from the north and the south, what kind of things are missing?" We discussed and discussed, but we couldn't come up with a good idea. Suddenly someone suggested: "Zhu Yuanzhang likes to watch flower drums, let's play flower drums." At this time, everyone reminded: "That's right! In the past, he could sing flower drum songs himself, so let's play flower drums. The emperor must be very good. I like it." The opinion was finally unanimous. So, they selected some drummers who played the flower drums best and singers who sang the flower drums most beautifully. They also found someone to compose new lyrics. They were led by people who showed up, walked through the small roads and took the main roads, and headed towards Nanjing.

The emperor would rather listen to the flower drums than eat

A group of flower drummers, accompanied by the villagers, came to Nanjing happily all the way. At this time, the grand ceremony for Zhu Yuanzhang's enthronement had just been held. Zhu Yuanzhang was very happy when he heard that people were coming from his hometown, so he sent someone to take them to the front hall to wait on them, and then notified the people around him to prepare a banquet for them.

After a while, the enthronement ceremony was completed, and Zhu Yuanzhang came to meet with the villagers. Zhu Yuanzhang actually became the emperor, but he still didn't forget his hometown people. When he met everyone, he was extremely affectionate. He also heard that a flower drummer was specially brought for him. Longyan was even more happy. He immediately said with a smile on his face: "It's great. It has been ten or twenty years since I joined the army and started the rebellion. I have listened to the flower drum, and this time you have to sing a few verses for me."

When Zhu Yuanzhang was happy, the people in his hometown were even more happy, and they all said together: "Today the emperor ascends the throne, there is no difference between us. I know that the emperor likes to listen to flower drums, so I brought them to the emperor specially. We will play and sing well on the occasion of today's great joy." As he said this, he prepared to play the drums. At this moment, a eunuch suddenly came to report: "Long live the Emperor! The meal is ready. Please have a meal, Your Majesty!" It turned out that it was time to eat. The player who plays the flower drum wants to play, but is afraid that it will delay the emperor's meal; the player who sings the flower drum wants to sing, but is afraid that the emperor will be hungry. The leader of the team looked at everyone's mood and thought: Let's ask Zhu Yuanzhang again to see what the emperor's opinion is. He asked Zhu Yuanzhang: "Long live my lord, do you think you should sing first and then eat, or eat before singing?" Zhu Yuanzhang was in high spirits and could not care about eating, so he hurriedly replied: "Sing first and then eat!"

Zhu Yuanzhang wanted to sing first and then eat. As soon as he ordered it, the flower drummers had already hammered down the drums, and the drums were ringing. "Dong, dong, choke! Dong, dong, choke!..." After a burst of gongs and drums, the singers let go. Throat, sing the flower drum song. The singers were all well-chosen, and the lyrics were all made up. Zhu Yuanzhang had not heard it for a long time, and when it suddenly sounded, it was really pleasant to the ears and heartfelt.

The reason for carrying a flower drum to beg for food

The flower drum was played and the song was sung. Zhu Yuanzhang was happy to see it and satisfied to hear it. After singing, he immediately sent a message: "Bring me some silver quickly, and give some to each of them.

From now on, when you are in your hometown, the lucky ones will be my parents and officials, and the unlucky ones will show me the tomb. "After saying that, he announced a banquet for everyone to drink and eat.

Zhu Yuanzhang's last words were said casually out of joy, but he never took them as the truth in the future. Who? Those who heard it regarded it as a golden saying, thinking that from then on, Zhu Yuanzhang really only wanted us to enjoy happiness. He only needed to sing, not do anything, just eat and have fun, and no longer need to work hard. They returned from the capital. After returning to their hometown, they spread the news one after another, and within a few days, everyone in the county knew about it. After singing and drinking, the fields were stopped and the land was stopped. It just so happened that in the second year after Zhu Yuanzhang ascended the throne, Fengyang began to build a capital city, and a large number of craftsmen gathered there. Another 140,000 wealthy households were moved from Jiangsu and Zhejiang to settle down. As a result, the land was reduced, the population increased, there was less harvest, more food, fewer people farming, and more people eating the imperial grain. Seeing that the warehouse was empty and the food was running out, my eyes were wide open, waiting eagerly for Zhu Yuanzhang to send food, but I couldn't wait, so I had to pick up the flower drum and go. Begging for food. Go to someone's door, play a flower drum and gong and sing a song first, and then open your mouth to beg for food. It really becomes "sing first and then eat", and I sing it for three hundred and sixty days a year.

Later, they complained that this was caused by Zhu Yuanzhang's "golden words" of "singing first and eating later", so they made up a flower drum song and sang: "Speak of Fengyang, talk about Fengyang. Fengyang is a good place. Since Zhu Yuanzhang came out, ten years ago There was a nine-year drought..."
