Puyuan Town is located in the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta Plain, at the middle node of Shanghai, Hangzhou and the Soviet Union. There are National Highway 320, Shenjiahu Expressway, Jiahu Highway, Tong Jia Highway and Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in the area. The ancient place name of Puyuan Town is Xu Li, also known as Yu Er. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal built in the Sui Dynasty passes through the territory. Before making suggestions in Song Dynasty, it was a grass market, which was called "Lake Tour", "Beautiful Scenery" and "Pu Chuan".

Xuande in Ming Dynasty (1426 to 1435) was divided into Jiaxing, Xiushui and Tongxiang counties, and one town was divided into Jiajie, Xiu Jie and Tong Jie. After the Revolution of 1911, the town was bounded by Chenghe River and belonged to Jiaxing County in the northeast, which was called Jiapu Town.
