In today's Baoding area, according to ancient records and archaeological excavations, the appearance of primitive villages can be traced back to 10,000 years ago, and the appearance of cities can be traced back to the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, villages and cities were scattered, resulting in a large number of cities, including Zhuo, Gu, Inverse, Xianyu, Linyi, Wusui, Yangcheng and Wuyang.

According to the Records of Xu Shui County, the city of Sui was built in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. This is the ancient Yan State, which was later built in Sui City and named Wusui. "Historical Records of Yan Zhaogong Family" contains: "Twelve years, Li Mu attacked Yan, pulled Wusui and Fangcheng (now Gu 'an). "Twelve years" refers to the twelfth year of the reign of Prince Xi (the first 243 years), when Sui City was a peripheral city of Yan Dou. By this time, the city rules have basically taken shape, with a city inside, a Guo outside and a moat outside. With the passage of time, some of these cities have been continued and developed, such as Hegu, while others have only ruins or no traces, such as Linyi and Yangcheng.

One day in the seventh year of Emperor Gaozu (200 years), Liu Bang, the Emperor Gaozu, who had just been surrounded by Xiongnu for seven days in Pingcheng (now Datong, Shanxi), left the encirclement of Xiongnu with Chen Pingji and went south, passing through Quinverse City. The change of Baoding's urban pattern began in the late Qing Dynasty. At the beginning of the 24th year of Guangxu (1898), the railway from Lugouqiao to Hankou began to be built, and the railway station was built outside Xiguan in Baoding the following year, which gradually flourished, with more buildings and population. In addition, large-scale power generation and flour processing enterprises have been built on both sides of the Waifu River in Nanguan, relying on Fuhe Wharf and shipping, resulting in modern industrial buildings and industrial zones. There is a military academy outside Dongguan, and the streets and lanes also extend from Dongguan. The city began to break through the wall.

After the founding of New China, Baoding began to build peace. In 1950s and 1960s, a number of national key industrial projects settled in Baoding, forming a western suburb industrial zone, adding a large number of industrial buildings and rapidly expanding the urban area. Since the 1990s, with the acceleration of the transformation of the old city, the architectural pattern of the old city has undergone tremendous changes, from the neighborhood style of bungalows and hutongs to the park style of unit buildings.
