Is English a lame major?

English major is not chicken ribs major. If you learn English well in four years in college, you will not be a chicken rib major. If you don't have any knowledge and skills after four years, any major will be a chicken rib major for you. Indeed, there are too many people learning English now, whether you are an English major or a non-English major, but always remember one thing: there are too many people learning English and too few people are eager to learn.

You don't need to learn to the top of the English pyramid like Sun Ning and Zhang Lu, but at least if you learn better than the average person, then English major is definitely not a chicken rib major.

In fact, English major is a relatively fair major, because whether you were born in 1985/211,or graduated from two ordinary colleges or even a junior college, what quantifies your ability is your certificate and your English education. If you are an ordinary undergraduate with TEM-8, IELTS-8, TOEFL1/KLOC-0 and CATTI-2, you will never be worse than any student whose qualification is lower than that of the "prestigious school" above you in the talent recruitment market.

Therefore, the first step to prevent English majors from becoming chicken ribs is to learn professional knowledge well and lay a solid foundation for you, so that you are not afraid of the wind and rain, because your roots are firmly established. But English is still a tool.

If you don't want to work in translation or culture and education, then you must do something else:

1, minor in other majors to make your English more professional. What do you mean? For example, if you plan to enter a fortune 500 company like Procter & Gamble in the future, then you must be proficient in business knowledge. Besides business English itself, you can minor in marketing and management. If you want to enter a company like Google in the future, then you have to minor in computer, programming, multimedia information processing technology and so on.

2. Participate in extracurricular activities and competitions related to majors. Note that what I said is related to my major, and it should be closely related. I suggest you join more senior groups in this major, because you will usually find many opportunities to participate in such activities around them. For example, some large-scale international exchange meetings in your place occasionally have English volunteers. Don't think that you won't go just after lunch, because this is an excellent opportunity to practice oral English and learn more knowledge!

In addition, there are many English-related competitions. You can take part in the English speech contest of "2 1 Century Cup" or "FLTRP", which is also a process that can exercise your spoken English, your logical thinking, your knowledge and insight, and your sensitivity. There are English debating competitions, writing competitions, national english contest for college students and so on. There is even the "Star of Hope" English Talent Competition, so you can take part whenever you have the chance! These competitions are held every year. If you fail in the first year, that's normal, which means you still have something to accumulate.

3. Go abroad once if you can. Of course, going abroad this time is not to follow! Group! Brigade! Swimming. Yes! Now, with the friendly exchanges between China and other countries in the world, there are many international projects that China can participate in. For example, study tours, international volunteers, paid internship programs and so on.
