Southwest University for Nationalities, formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities, was founded in July of 1950 and formally established in June of 195 1. In April 2003, it was renamed Southwest University for Nationalities, and in March 201May, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education jointly established Southwest University for Nationalities.

Southwest University for Nationalities, located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is a comprehensive university for nationalities directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China. It was jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Chengdu Municipal People's Government, and was selected into the education and training plan for outstanding legal talents, the education and training plan for outstanding agricultural and forestry talents, the plan for high-level backbone talents of ethnic minorities and the "double-first-class" construction plan of Sichuan Province. This school is one of the earliest universities for nationalities in New China.
