Interior Designer Career Plan

Interior Designer Career Planning

Background

In September 2010, I studied computer application at the School of Electronic Information, Hubei Three Gorges Vocational and Technical College. I originally wanted to transfer I majored in English. Later, because of the change of major, I specifically found our counselor. If I didn’t have a better advantage, then I might as well stay in the class and be the leader. By accident, I entered the computer industry. , the internship started in November 2012, and I entered the interior design industry by accident. I passed the professional qualification certification for interior design practitioners and started my career in a small design company! Looking back now, I feel that my life in college was a bit of a trap!

Summarize the direction of my professional courses during college:

1. Computer network maintenance: computer assembly and repair, computer network;

2. Office secretarial: computer basics office, English;

3. Web design and programming: c language, C#, database, web page design, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Flash;

4. Graphic design and printing drawings Text: Adobe Illustrator CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS5, three major components;

5. Interior design: sketching, autoCAD, 3DS max;

6. Film and television design: adobe.premiere. pro.cs4, Adobe After Effects CS4 (Adobe AE CS4).

Development

From November 2012 to early 2014, after working for a year and a half, I understood my career plan, and I had to think about it carefully, because in practice, I found that there were many things that I was powerless to do. The ideals that I had once been passionate about were really vulnerable in the face of reality. I thought I could shape myself well, but I didn’t find that many of the details of my life were bad. I was lethargic, impetuous, sloppy, and perfunctory. , lack of sense of time, etc. are all shortcomings common to young people today! I didn't expect that I still couldn't escape this disaster. Over the course of a year, my edges and corners began to slowly become rounded, and I became less aggressive when speaking, and more accustomed to thinking! Now I should be positioned as a draftsman, because what I learned in school is to understand software, and the exam is also a theoretical basis. I will really encounter a lot of problems at work! Without the support of design concepts and construction techniques, my drawing performance was always not very good, which put me into a difficult situation in life. Because of my poor work ability, I could not raise my salary, and I could not develop my personality charm. , the entire career development has encountered obstacles, so you have to constantly change according to your own abilities and the environment!

My understanding of the interior design industry

Market situation

In 2013, there were more than 200,000 interior design professionals in my country, and it is still growing. According to industry insiders, the income of professional interior designers generally takes the form of basic salary plus commission. The design fee commission is generally between 2-10% of the entire decoration project cost. The basic income is generally not too high, with a basic salary of around 1,500-4,500. Taking Kunming as an example, the annual salary of a truly capable designer is around 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. For more important roles such as design director and project design leader, the annual income can reach hundreds of thousands of yuan or more. Due to the huge market demand, interior designers are relatively popular in the market and have been called "golden gray collars".

Have knowledge

A mature interior designer must have the qualities of an artist, the rigorous thinking of an engineer, the rich experience and life experience of a traveler, the business philosophy of an operator, and the financial Expert cost awareness.

There is a senior in the design field who said that design is thought. Design is a comprehensive reflection of a designer’s professional knowledge, life experience, cultural and artistic accomplishment, moral character and other aspects. Only when the inner cultivation is improved can we create works of art, fine products, top quality and divine products. Otherwise, we will just be in the primary stage of imitation and become ordinary. A designer with low moral character and moral integrity will not have a high level of design taste. Therefore, interior designers should master: basic art theory, interior floor plan drawing, interior renderings, post-processing of renderings, decoration budget, decoration materials, practical tools, architectural Feng Shui, etc.

Understand the workflow of indoor renderings, recognize common menus and command layouts, and lay the foundation for subsequent learning. Can create interior decorations such as lamps, chairs, tables, beds, windows, etc. Understand the use of the Vray renderer and various parameters, master the techniques of using Vray lighting, and create a picture effect that is closer to reality. Use Vray to render realistic effects that are close to reality. Master the techniques of color correction and special effects production in Photoshop, and use the relevant functions of Photoshop for post-production synthesis. ps: 1) Comprehensive training for large-scale indoor projects. 2) Exchange of experience on indoor renderings.

Basic requirements

1 Professional knowledge - Interior designers must know what effects various designs will bring, such as the mechanical effects of different shapes and the impact on practicality , the ergonomics involved, cost and processing methods, etc. This knowledge cannot be mastered in one day, but must be integrated and applied comprehensively.

2 Creativity - Rich imagination, innovative ability and foresight are essential. This is a major difference between interior designers and engineers. Engineering design uses calculation or analogy methods, and the nature of the work is mainly improvement and perfection rather than innovation; modeling design pays great attention to originality and originality, and the design elements are endlessly changing lines and surfaces, rather than rigorous and cumbersome data. The styling design derived from "analogy" cannot be excellent.

3. Art skills - simply speaking, it is the level of painting, and further speaking, it is the level of aesthetics and aesthetics. It is certain that there is not an interior designer in the world who cannot draw. "Picture is the language of the designer". It goes without saying. Although there are other ways to express designs (such as computers), drawing with pen and paper is still the simplest, direct and fastest method. In fact, although computers and models can be used to express ideas more comprehensively, most of the most important imagination and deliberation processes are carried out with simple paper and pen.

4 Design skills - including manual clay model making and computer design software application capabilities, etc. Of course, these skills require professional training. There is no natural craftsman, but strong hands-on ability is a must.

5 Work skills - coordination and communication skills. This involves management, but since design plays a decisive guiding role in the entire product image, technology and production, only good coordination and communication can ensure the efficiency and effect of design. This is an additional requirement for modern interior designers.

6 Market awareness - production (cost) and market (customer tastes, cultural background, environmental climate, etc.) must be considered in design. Designs that are out of touch with the market will definitely not be easy to sell, and interior designers will not have an easy time either.

7 Responsibilities - The designer should learn as much as possible about the customer's occupation, preferences, functions required by the owner and style pursued through negotiations with the customer and on-site inspections.

Interior designers are divided into two categories

One is the pure designer, who only makes money from design. The other is the majority in the industry Marketing designer. Rather than being a designer, it is better to say that this type of designer is a product promoter. Let’s first talk about the differences in the work of these two types of designers. Only by explaining the two different types of interior designer careers can After explaining how much salary they get every month.

The first type of designers usually work in that kind of design firm. Their basic salary is relatively high, and some can even reach about 4,000~5,000 a month. Of course , the premise depends on the efficiency of the company. In their company, they often come into contact with high-end customers. The only difference between them and other decoration companies is that they do not construct, only do pure design. But each project must be charged Design fees. These design fees are divided between the designer and the company. If it is in first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, the monthly income of a designer of this type should be: 4,000 (basic salary) commission (depending on your performance) Design fee = monthly income. Here I just show the basic salary in figures, because commissions and design fees can only be generated when you have customers. If you don’t have customers, you can only get 4,000. In Some companies will also have task quotas, and these task quotas are linked to the basic salary. If you do not complete the task quota, your basic salary should only be 40. Therefore, as a designer of this type, you must have a lot of qualifications. Deep knowledge and design ability. Otherwise, it is basically difficult to earn tens of thousands a month. I can only take first-tier cities as an example. The basic salary in second-tier cities should be around 2,500~4,000. Everything else is the same, it is also the basic salary plus commission plus design fee. .As this type of designers, they are generally those who have sufficient experience and have been in the industry for a long time. Their design fees tend to be higher. The design fee of the well-known Hong Kong designer Gao Wen'an has reached 1,600 /square meter. Of course, there are still very few master-level designers in China. Generally, design fees in first-tier cities are generally between 150 and 300. There are higher ones, but they are still in the minority. From this we can give an example For example, if A completes the task in one month and charges a design fee for a 150-square-meter area, and his design fee is 150/square meter, then his salary should be: 4,000 (150*150/2)=19,000 yuan Of course, this can only be done after receiving the design fee of 150 square meters.

The second type of designers is the majority in the industry today. The companies they work for generally belong to the group that both undertakes design and Companies that undertake construction have strong marketing concepts because their interest orientation is to carry out the project and obtain management profits from it. Therefore, companies like them generally do not charge corresponding design fees. However, the designer’s income It is also directly related to the cost of the contract he signed. When working as a designer in such a company, the general basic salary is around 1,500~2,500. The basic salary here is tied to the amount of tasks. Assume that the monthly task of this designer is 300,000. (Project cost) Then when he completes the task of 300,000 yuan, his salary should be: 1,500 [commission (300,000*0.3/2)] = 6,000 yuan. Of course, this is after completing the task. The reason why the commission just now is removed The second reason is that the commission is paid in two installments, one after the project starts, and the other after the project is completed. This is to ensure that during the construction process, the designer must go to the construction site frequently to ensure that the construction is consistent with the design. Because this type of designers have less income from design fees, their salary in the company is different from that of the first type of designers. However, this does not mean that their income is less than that of the first type of designers. . Because they can also get extra money. That is the unspoken rule in the industry - kickbacks. The kickbacks alone for some designers may be higher than their wages and commissions. Therefore, as long as such designers work on many projects, their income will be higher. It will be more. If there are fewer projects that month, then his income will also be reduced. Suppose the designer does not receive one order a month, then he will face the risk of having his basic salary deducted. If he has not signed the order in the second month, He will be in danger of being fired. So

, they will try their best to sign the contract, but their service will be greatly reduced. How can the customer's home be well decorated if they cannot receive attentive service from the designer? Therefore, this is the number one complaint rate in the decoration industry. One of the reasons.

Finally, I will list the above statistics with you in more detail.

The first type of designer: basic salary of 4,000 yuan

Commission: 0.2 of the engineering design fee

Design fee: 50 of the total engineering design fee

Generally, designers in first-tier cities should have a monthly income of 2 if they are capable and charge high design fees. About 10,000 yuan

The second type of designer: basic salary of 2,000 yuan (if the task is completed, 80% of the full salary will be paid if the task is not completed)

Commission: 0.3~0.5 of the total project cost. Etc.

Design fee: Same as above (if the customer agrees and is willing to pay)

Rebate: This income cannot be estimated. It can be more or less, depending on the designer Where is the conscience.

Generally, in first-tier cities, if the monthly signings of such designers are around 300,000 yuan and they can get rebates every month, their income should be around 20,000 to 30,000 yuan.

This It’s just that my preliminary statistics are based on the best aspect. Some designers may only earn 2,000 per month. Because this industry mainly depends on your own strength, you can decide how much you want to earn.

 Summary

Engaged in the interior design industry, what we students who have just entered the society can do is to make construction drawings and renderings, and let the pictures speak for themselves, but this is only in the early stages. If you want to be successful in this To survive as a business, we must understand budgeting, craftsmanship, and order negotiation. We must first learn to support ourselves before we can better improve ourselves! My current ability is only at the drawing stage, and the renderings are not realistic yet. It is really developing very slowly. Compared with other students who work in the catering service and sales industry, it is difficult for me to support my family and myself now. is the problem! In short, we must continue to improve ourselves and think more about problems!
