1954, Nansan Shui Mu Trade Union was established with 18 members. 1955, based on the trade union in Shui Mu, Nansan Construction Group was established, and 18 Shui Mu workers were recruited as teachers from Potou, plus local coolies, with more than 20 people. About 4000 people go out to work in the construction industry every year in Nansan rural area, earning 20 million yuan a year, which is the way to get rid of poverty and become rich. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, the transportation industry in the South Three Islands was relatively backward, and the transportation mainly depended on sea transportation. There are no docks, no means of transportation, only ferries, and the facilities are simple.

Nansan used to rely only on ferries for external traffic. There are Guangzhou Bay Ferry, Gaosha Imperial Capital Ferry, Shijiao Ferry, Xinchang Ferry, Hucun Bay Ferry and Xinmenkou Ferry. Xinmenkoudu is the main traffic ferry from south to west (now Xiashan). There is no fixed sailing time, no fixed wharf and facilities. Most ferries are parked on the beach, so passengers have to take off their shoes and wade across. Children have to rely on adults to carry them ashore.
