Yangtze University is the largest comprehensive university in Hubei Province with the most comprehensive disciplines. It is one of the four high-level universities selected by the national "Education Powerful Country Project" and is a key construction in Hubei Province.

Hubei Province is a "first-class university in China", which is also jointly established by Hubei Provincial People's Government, China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Co., Ltd., China Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd. and China Offshore Oil Group Co., Ltd., Hubei Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Approved by the Ministry of Education in April 2003, the school was formed by the merger of Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers. The former Jianghan Petroleum Institute was formerly known as 1950, the Beijing Institute of Petroleum Technology, and 1978 began to hold general undergraduate education, belonging to China Oil and Gas Group.

Since 2000, it has been jointly built by the central and local governments and handed over to Hubei Province for management. Hubei Agricultural College, formerly known as Huazhong Agricultural College Jingzhou Branch, was founded in 1977, 1989 and approved by the State Education Commission as an ordinary undergraduate college.

The school is an authorized unit for doctoral degrees, which trains talents of all levels and types. At present, there are three first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points and three corresponding postdoctoral research mobile stations, namely, geological resources and geological engineering, oil and gas engineering and crop science. There are 38 authorized points for master's degree in the first-level discipline, and the categories of master's degree authorization are 19. People with the same educational level have the right to apply for master's degree.

At present, there are four dominant disciplines in Hubei Province during the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, namely, intelligent oil and gas exploration, green and efficient production of agricultural products, green chemical industry and clean energy, and intelligent oil and gas equipment. Six disciplines, including engineering, botany and zoology, agricultural science, earth science, clinical medicine and chemistry, entered the global ranking of ESI with 1%. There are 65 undergraduate enrollment majors (categories) in the school, including 6 national specialty, 1 1 Hubei brand specialty, 25 national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites and 24 provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites.
