Huangyan Island (Democracy Reef) [Huangyan Island] is affiliated to Sansha City, Hainan Province, China. It is the only island and reef out of the water in China's Zhongsha Islands. It is located at 15°07′ north latitude and 117°51 east longitude. ’, about 160 nautical miles away from Zhongsha Atoll, is China’s inherent territory.

Huangyan Island is a large atoll in the shape of an isosceles triangle, 15 kilometers long from east to west, 15 kilometers wide from north to south, with a perimeter of about 55 kilometers and an area of ??about 150 square kilometers (including lagoons). Except for hundreds of large reef blocks (ranging from 1 to 4 square meters) that surround the lagoon, the top surface is generally 0.5 to 3 meters underwater.

China was the first to discover and name Huangyan Island, and has long used and administered it. Since the Yuan Dynasty, it has been under the long-term jurisdiction of China's territory. It is China's inherent territory and belongs to Sansha City, Hainan Province, China. The government of the Republic of China has been in charge of Scarborough Shoal for a long time, and the United States has long recognized that the island belongs to China. In the early 1970s, the US military stationed in the Philippines used Scarborough Shoal as a training range but did not acquire sovereignty.
