China's highways are divided into four administrative levels: national highway, provincial highway, county road and township road. The regularity of serial numbers of national roads, provincial roads and county roads is determined by the pinyin initials of Chinese characters of countries, provinces and counties as their corresponding identifiers (except for township roads), and the serial numbers are composed of identifiers and data.

The difference among national roads, provincial roads, county roads and township roads depends on the difference of initial numbers. National Highway-a trunk highway with national political, metallurgical and economic development functions, connects large and medium-sized cities in China and forms the framework of China highway network.

The serial number of the national highway starts with the English letter G, and G 1xx stands for the radial national highway from Beijing. G2xx stands for the national road across the north and south, and G3xx stands for the national road across the goods.

Provincial highway-refers to the highway with the functions of political, metallurgical and economic development at the provincial and ministerial levels, and is also the trunk highway connecting key areas of this province, which shall be undertaken by the provincial and ministerial highway departments.

The number of the provincial highway begins with the letter S, which is similar to the national highway. S 1xx stands for the radial provincial road starting from the provincial capital. S2xx stands for north-south longitudinal provincial road, and S3xx stands for article horizontal provincial road.

County Road-a highway with political, metallurgical and economic development functions in county towns and urban areas, connecting county towns and key towns.

The number of county roads is represented by three digits beginning with the English letter X.

Township road-refers to the highway connecting towns and towns.

The coding of township roads is similar to that of county roads, and is represented by three numbers beginning with y.
