Nanshan belongs to Zhenkang County, Lincang City, Yunnan Province. It is located in the southwest border of Yunnan Province, west of Lincang City, and in the middle of the China-Myanmar border. Nanshan Town is connected to Muchang Township to the east, Mengding Town of Gengma County to the south, Kokang County of Myanmar's Shan State to the west, and Fengwei Town and Mengdui Township to the north. It is the political, economic, cultural and commercial center of the county.

Nanshan Town is located at the southern end of the Hengduan Mountains. It belongs to the mid-low valley in southwest Yunnan. It is located in the southwest border and is a low-latitude mountainous area, close to the Tropic of Cancer.

Nanshan Town is one of the three townships (towns) on the border of Zhenkang County. It is also the second largest settlement of the De'ang ethnic group in China. It is 884 kilometers away from the provincial capital Kunming and 329 kilometers away from Lincang.
