In the 32nd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Shandong Higher Agricultural School was established in Jinan. Most of the students were scholars and could study abroad directly after graduation.

In 1913, it was renamed Shandong Public Agricultural College.

In 1926, under the supervision of the warlord Zhang Zongchang, five Shandong public agricultural vocational schools—agricultural college, engineering college, business college, mining college, medical college, and law college—were merged to form Shandong University. , among which the public agricultural college became the provincial Agricultural College of Shandong University.

The school was closed due to the May 30th Massacre in 1928. In the same year, the Provincial College of Agriculture of Shandong University was changed to the College of Agriculture of National Shandong University and moved to Qingdao. In 1947, Shandong Provincial Agricultural College was established at the former site of Jinan Public Agricultural College, with its dean Yan Ruomin.

In September 1948, Jinan was liberated, and the Shandong Provincial People’s Government took over the former Shandong Provincial Agricultural College and Shandong Provincial Senior Agricultural Vocational School. In December of the same year, the Shandong Provincial People’s Government Industrial Department The agriculture and forestry college held in Qingzhou was merged into the College of Agriculture. In September 1952, with the needs of national construction, Shandong Provincial Agricultural College merged with the then Shandong University Agricultural College, and at the same time, the Agricultural College of Qilu University, the Horticulture Department of Jinling University, and the Fruit Tree Group of the Horticulture Department of Nanjing University were transferred to form a new Shandong Agricultural University.

In November 1953, in order to strengthen the party’s political and ideological leadership of the school and ensure and supervise the implementation of the party’s principles and policies in the school, Shandong Agricultural College established the Central *** Shandong Agricultural College Committee and the Party Committee with the approval of the Shandong Branch Secretary Huashan.

In 1958, according to the instructions of the Provincial Party Committee, the school moved to Tai'an. Shandong Agricultural University, Shandong Forestry College, Shandong Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, Tai'an Agricultural College, and Tai'an Water Conservancy School merged to form Shandong Agricultural University. In 1959, it was renamed Shandong Agricultural University. In September 1983, the former Shandong Agricultural College was renamed Shandong Agricultural University, with former dean Chen Ruitai as president and Wang Chengwang still as party committee secretary.

In July 1999, with the approval of the Shandong Provincial People's Government, Shandong Agricultural University and Shandong Water Conservancy College were merged, and Shandong Forestry School was merged into the new Shandong Agricultural University.

In 2010, it was selected as one of the five application-based schools in the "Shandong Characteristic Famous School Project".

In May 2012, the State Forestry Administration and the Shandong Provincial People's Government signed an agreement to cooperate in the establishment of Shandong Agricultural University.

In June 2012, the Shandong Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture signed the "Agreement on Cooperation to Establish Shandong Agricultural University". Since then, Shandong Agricultural University has officially entered the provincial-ministerial construction university ranks.
