What are English syllables? Popcorn net
In English, vowels (a, e, I, o, u) are particularly loud. A vowel phoneme (not a letter) can form a syllable, and a vowel phoneme combined with one or more consonant phonemes can also form a syllable.
Generally speaking, vowel phonemes can form syllables, while consonant phonemes are not loud enough to form syllables. There are four consonants [m], [n], [ng] and [l] in English consonant phonemes, all of which are ringing tones, and they can also form syllables when combined with consonant phonemes. The syllables they form often appear at the end of words, usually unstressed syllables.
There are seven types of syllables:
1, a closed syllable that ends with one or more consonants (except r) and has only one vowel phoneme in the middle. This vowel is usually a short sound. In closed syllables, vowels do not pronounce the letters themselves. Such as maps, desks and ducks.
2. Open syllables, syllables ending in vowels, are divided into absolute open syllables and relative open syllables.
(1) Absolute open syllable: a syllable ending in a vowel sound. We, hi, yo-yo
(2) Relatively open syllables: syllables consisting of vowels+consonants+silent e letters (≥ 1). For example, the first syllable in a disyllabic word, take, make, tube, is usually pronounced very long, such as tiger, baby, paper.
3. Vowel+consonant+silent e(magic-e syllable). The vowels of these syllables pronounce the letters themselves, and the end of e is silent, such as bone, page, bake and make.
4. Vowel team syllables, which are composed of two vowels into a whole sound, such as team, boat, seed and coat.
5. Vowel +R (+r(r control syllable). The vowels with R are called R-controlled sounds, such as bar, head, fort and farther.
6. diphthongs syllable/compound vowel syllable. This kind of syllable usually consists of two vowels, such as foil, boiling, boy, toy, cloud, boy and toy, but its pronunciation is vowel /i/.
7. Consonant -le syllables, syllables ending in consonant +le, such as bubble, handle, circle, humble, jungle and trample.
