1. Northwest Minzu University, referred to as "Northwest Minzu University", is located in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. It is a full-time general undergraduate institution directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. Established jointly by the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Gansu Provincial People's Government, it is the first ethnic higher education institution established after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is the minority backbone program, the first batch of national outstanding agricultural and forestry talent education and training program reform pilot universities, a high-level university construction unit in Gansu Province, a member unit of the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, and a governing unit of the UNESCO China Entrepreneurship Education Alliance.

2. The school originated from the Tibetan Issues Research Class and Tibetan School established by the First Field Army of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in Lanzhou in September 1949. In January 1950, it was restructured into the Third Department of Lanzhou Branch of Northwest People's Revolutionary University. In August 1950, Northwest College for Nationalities was officially established. In April 2003, Northwest College for Nationalities was renamed Northwest University for Nationalities.
