Harbin Medical University, referred to as "Harbin Medical University" for short, is the first batch of universities in the Ministry of Education to pilot seven-year higher medical education. It is a provincial university, a high-level university in Heilongjiang Province, a university with superior disciplines, a national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Central and Western Universities" and a pilot university of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Doctoral Education and Training Plan".

The school's predecessor was Harbin Medical College founded by Dr. Lian Dewu in September 1926 and Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army Health School founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi in October 19365438. It was founded in April 1949 by the former Harbin Medical University and the former First and Second Branches of Xingshan China Medical University.

On August 3, 2020, it was selected into the national advanced collective recommendation list for fighting COVID-19 epidemic; On September 8, 2020, the collective was awarded the honorary title of "National Advanced Collective in Fighting COVID-19 Epidemic" by the Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission.
