During the period of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the people's government of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region under the leadership of the China Production Party established some state-owned farms. During the third revolutionary civil war, the people's governments of the liberated areas successively organized forces to reclaim wasteland in the old liberated areas such as Northeast China and North China, and set up a number of state-owned farms. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), a large number of state farms were built and expanded in many areas. The 1950s and early 1960s saw the fastest growth in the number of state-owned farms. After more than 30 years of development, state-owned farms have spread all over China's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. In the early 1980s, the cultivated land area of state farms accounted for about 5.7% of the total cultivated land area in China.
