The origin of school motto:

During the period of 1958, Harbin Institute of Technology enrolled a number of students from accelerated middle schools, but these students had a poor foundation and often failed exams. Some people suggested that the examination standard could be lowered, but Chang Li, the principal, finally decided that in order to get the diploma of Harbin Institute of Technology, the most basic standards must be met.
