According to preliminary calculation, in order to completely cover the dry lake bottom with water injection and biologically control the surrounding salt desert, it is necessary to increase 654.38 billion cubic meters of water on the basis of the existing recharge.

Since 2004, Xinjiang has started the artificial water increase project in Ebinur Lake Basin, and established an artificial water increase operation area in the mountainous area of the upper reaches of Bortala River, the main river in Ebinur Lake Basin. In winter (12 to March of the following year) and summer (June to August), rockets and anti-aircraft guns are used to launch rain bombs to increase precipitation and replenish the amount of water entering the lake. The first phase of the project will be completed 20 10 years ago with an investment of 20 million yuan.
