The school is one of the three origins of Jiaotong University. Its historical origins can be traced back to 1896. Its predecessor was the Beijing Railway Management Institute founded by the Qing government; in 1917 it was reorganized into the Railway Management School and the School of Posts and Telecommunications; in 1921 In 2001, it merged with Shanghai Industrial College and Tangshan Industrial College to form Jiaotong University.

After the reorganization of Jiaotong University in 1923, the school was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University; in 1950, the school was named Northern Jiaotong University; in 1952, Northern Jiaotong University was abolished and the school was renamed Beijing Railway Institute; in 1970, the school was renamed Northern Jiaotong University.
