Mahone's appointment ceremony

On June 25th, 2008, the appointment ceremony of the new dean of the School of Life Sciences of Fudan University was held in Yifu Science and Technology Building. Professor Ma Hong, a famous plant molecular biology and developmental biologist, accepted the letter of appointment from President Wang and officially became the second globally recruited dean in the history of the School of Life Sciences of Fudan University. Li Jing, former president and vice president of the School of Life Sciences, shook hands with President Ma Hong. The appointment ceremony was presided over by Vice President Chen Xiaoman.

Professor Mahong, born in 1960, is one of the outstanding young Chinese scientists who are active in the American scientific community and have achieved fruitful scientific research results. He discovered the first G protein subunit in plants, and was also the co-discoverer of the flower homeobox gene. In recent years, he has focused on the molecular mechanism of plant reproductive development, including meiosis and pollen development. In addition to being a tenured full professor at Pennsylvania State University, Professor Mahong is the deputy editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Plant Molecular Science and the co-editor of the Journal of Integrated Plant Biology.

President Wang said at the appointment ceremony that one of the most important tasks of university presidents is to recruit the best scholars. It is hoped that Dean Ma Hong will lead the School of Life Sciences to jointly carry out scientific research, aim at frontier fields, integrate scientific research forces and enhance international influence.

Since 2003, Fudan University has been recruiting deans all over the world, and has successfully introduced famous scientists such as Professor Li Jing and Professor Zhu Yizheng. The introduction of Professor Mahong, Vice President Chen Xiaoman said that Professor Mahong has a world-class academic level. He is very practical and always holds the belief of serving the motherland. Joining Fudan University this time will not only promote the molecular botany of the College of Life Sciences to a higher level, but also help to promote the balanced development of related disciplines of life sciences.

Professor Ma Hong said that after he became the dean of the new School of Life Sciences, what he wanted to do most was to highlight the development of Fudan's characteristic fields on the basis of supporting the balanced development of existing disciplines.
