Traveling in the Mountain of Books —— Review of Sanlitun Store Design of Sanlian Taofen Bookstore

Sanlitun branch of Sanlian Taofen Bookstore, which is open 24 hours a day, held its opening ceremony on 23rd World Reading Day on April 20 18, adding a touch of book fragrance to the fashionable and noisy Sanlitun in Beijing.

The bookstore is located in Sanlitun West Street, which used to be a famous "dirty street" in Beijing, and the environmental sanitation was very bad. With the deepening of comprehensive improvement and upgrading in Beijing, the environment of this block has been improved. Sanlian Taofen Bookstore, as a part of the "dirty street" renovation plan, has been highly valued by the Beijing Municipal Government and Chaoyang District. Bookstores not only increase the cultural space of Huimin in Beijing, but also carry out cultural experience activities for Chinese and foreign book lovers based on the space, helping the construction of Beijing cultural center and international exchange center.

2. The memory of this place

The residential area where Sanlitun West Street is located was built in the 1970s. At that time, there were various food stalls, gourmet shops and bars on both sides of the street. Because it is close to the embassy district, many young people from all over the world gather, and it is particularly lively at night. Because the environment is dirty, it is called "dirty street".

After the transformation of 2065438+2007, the functional orientation of "dirty street" is clearer, the streamline is smoother, and it is more in line with the positioning of Beijing cultural center and international exchange center. However, its once free, rough and restless breath has gone away and become a memory.

Focusing on the Sanlian Bookstore project itself, the bookstore was formerly a prefabricated hollow slab building built in the 1970s. The decoration style of internal industrialization and the overall style of "dirty street" complement each other, reflecting the preferences and living conditions of young people at that time. This ancient building has undergone many functional transformations in different periods. Before this transformation, its function was a club and its structure was a frame structure.

In this purified street and this vacant ballroom "skeleton", how to make the bookstore function connect the original urban context with the new business behavior is the preliminary thinking of this design. How to make young people who come to Sanlitun not only pass by in a hurry, but also stay and wander in this bookstore, so as to retain the popularity of the original Dirty Street, is our design goal.

3. "shops" and "books"

Sanlian Bookstore adheres to the concept of "humanistic spirit and ideological wisdom", adheres to the standard of "first-class and cutting-edge", and mainly publishes books on humanities and society. The publication covers philosophy, history, literature, art, economy, politics, law and social life, and enjoys a high reputation among intellectuals and readers, and is known as "the spiritual home of intellectuals in China". "Fresh, solemn, earnest and realistic" is the "store style" summarized by Mr. Ji Xianlin.

In the process of full communication with Sanlian "professional booksellers", we have learned more about their respect for books and their insistence on "book format", that is, the protagonist of bookstores is books, the relationship between books and readers should be close and simple, and the design of space and furniture should give full consideration to the display and access of books, such as the spacing between bookshelves should be suitable for the size of books, and the bottom bookshelves should be tilted upward to facilitate readers' access.

How to attract tourists in Sanlitun, a place where young people gather, and make young people willing to stay here in a strong business atmosphere is a problem that we repeatedly communicated with Sanlian Bookstore during the design process. In addition, how to deal with the operating difficulties faced by physical bookstores today? How to make use of the natural flow of people in Sanlitun West Street, attract tourists, effectively increase collection and turnover, also need to give an answer through design.

4, design overview

The overall indoor and outdoor style of this design follows the unique unpretentious style positioning of Sanlian Taofen Bookstore and conforms to the unique temperament of the original place space.

4. 1. space prototype

Based on the spatial model of traditional western libraries, we set up a two-tier horse-rail system in the case of very limited space, which can not only increase the collection of books, but also serve as a unique dynamic line in space, triggering different spatial experiences and forming special sightseeing feelings; At the same time, it is convenient for sales staff to manage books effectively.

4.2. Travel Notes of Shushan

On the basis of this space prototype, the design inspiration of the overall space form was taken from Fan Kuan's Travel Notes of Xishan in the Northern Song Dynasty, which transformed people's reading experience in the bookstore into a winding journey of knowledge and culture.

Starting from behavioral science, the original backfill depth is skillfully used, and the excavation depth is 70cm, so as to increase the indoor clear height and form a two-story staggered path rotation system, which makes the building have more freedom, and the collection of books increases from 30,000 to 80,000. Layers of books have become trees in the bookstore landscape and distant mountains behind them. The winding path runs through all the book collection spaces, and readers are full of interest and linger.

The bookshelf system shaped by the infinite symbol ""eliminates the 10 column in the original space, and also forms a rich spatial pattern in the bookstore. Different places such as reading area, lecture hall area and coffee area are all "standing by the mountain" and can be put away freely.

Designers fully communicate with Sanlian "professional calligraphers" and realize the persistence and expression of "calligraphy style" through design. Bookshelf laminates are completely compatible with books, maximizing the use of space and effectively improving book collection; The height of the bookshelf and the design of the horse path put an end to the phenomenon of putting books on the bookshelf as decorations, so that every book can be easily read by readers and picked flowers during the trip to Shushan.

4.3. midnight light

The predecessor of this project is an old building built in the 1970s, which has undergone various functional transformations in different periods. This time, it was transformed into a bookstore, and its external design was "Who left a lamp for midnight in the city?" For creativity, the 40-meter-long facade along the street consists of a series of rhythmic micro-exhibition boxes, lanterns and floor-to-ceiling windows. Weak lights are transmitted from various holes, bringing warmth to people coming and going.

5. Operation situation

Sanlitun, Sanlian Taofen Bookstore, with a total area of 66 1, has 28,000 kinds of books and 80,000 volumes. During the epidemic period, the average daily turnover of bookstores on holidays was 30,000 to 50,000 yuan, and the average daily turnover was 1.2 to 1.5 million yuan, which was quite excellent in physical bookstores.

After the completion of the bookstore, it has also been widely favored by readers, and the sales volume of books has been continuously improved. Because of its unique space experience, it has become a popular place for various cultural activities.
