Wuhai City is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, bordering Ordos Plateau in the east, Shizuishan City in Ningxia across the river in the south, Alashan Grassland in the west and fertile Hetao Plain in the north. It is the junction of North China and Northwest China, the junction of "Ningmeng but Shaanxi and Gansu" economic zone and the central area of the economic belt along the Yellow River. The total area is 1754 square kilometers, and the basic landform is "three mountains, two valleys and one river".

To the east is Table Mountain, which stretches for hundreds of miles, with Gande Mountain in the middle and Wuhu Mountain in the west. Each mountain belongs to the northern end of Helan Mountain, and the three mountains are arranged in parallel in the north-south direction, forming two flat valleys in the middle. The Yellow River flows through the urban area along the valley of Gandre Mountain, blocking Wulanbuhe Desert from entering the Hetao area.
