Xuancheng City is located in the transition zone between the southeastern hills and the plains of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The terrain is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest. The altitude is generally 800-1800 meters in the middle mountainous areas in the south, 500-800 meters in the low mountainous areas, 50-500 meters in the central hilly areas, and generally below 50 meters in the northern plain areas.

There are three major mountain ranges in the territory: Huangshan Mountain, Tianmu Mountain and Jiuhua Mountain. Tianmu Mountain extends from southwest to northeast, from the east of Jixi County through the south of Ningguo City and into Guangde and Langxi counties.
