The history of China Science Newspaper

1959~1966

On January 1, 1959, "Science News" was founded (a weekly folio newspaper). Guo Moruo, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed the "Science Journal" registration.

In early 1959, shortly after the publication of "Journal of Science" was founded, the first correspondent meeting of Journal of Systematic Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was held. Du Runsheng, Secretary-General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered an important speech at the meeting on behalf of the Academy’s Party Committee.

In the few years since its establishment, "Science News" has repeatedly stopped and resumed publication. After the second publication on November 12, 1962, the words "internal information" were removed.

Shortly after the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution", "Science Daily", the mouthpiece of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, closed down like many newspapers across the country. 1979~1988

The National Science Conference ushered in the spring of science, and "Science News", which had been forced to suspend publication for 12 years, resumed publication on November 2, 1979. Li Chang, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, on behalf of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, wrote a resumption speech for Science News with the title "Spring Breeze Blows Again".

In December 1979, "Science News" adopted an open recruitment within the hospital for the first time, and 5 people were transferred through examination from more than 30 applicants. By the end of 1980, a basic team of 14 full-time editors and editors had been formed.

In January 1981, "Science News" held its first press conference in Beijing. Hu Keshi, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered a speech on behalf of the Academy’s Party Committee, especially appreciating the newspaper’s practice of setting up part-time reporters.

In May 1984, on the eve of the public launch of "Science News" in China, the editorial department, with the consent and support of the relevant branches of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, decided to set up reporter stations in East China, Central South, Northwest and Northeast China. .

"Science News" began to be publicly distributed domestically in 1985. The Beijing Post Office was responsible for the domestic distribution business. The number of subscriptions that year was nearly 50,000.

In April 1986, "Science News" conducted a discussion on the Three Gorges Project of the Yangtze River, which caused great repercussions at home and abroad. In order to promote the scientific and democratic process of my country's decision-making, it mobilized and gave full play to the role of scientists in the country. The consultation and advisory role during construction has produced positive results.

On May 7, 1986, the Chinese Academy of Sciences issued a document [Science Newspaper No. 0447], requiring branches that have not yet established a reporter station to "actively prepare to establish a reporter station as soon as possible." By the end of 1987, "Science News" had established 18 reporter stations in various branches of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and directly affiliated research institutes outside Beijing, with 23 full-time reporters, 40 part-time reporters, 28 special reporters, and nearly 500 correspondents. A large-scale and high-quality communication team was formed.

In January 1987, "Science" was changed from Monday to Tuesday. It has expanded from mainly domestic distribution to foreign distribution (foreign publication number is D995).

"Science News" relies closely on the strong backing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the largest scientific group in China, and places special emphasis on the accuracy, scientificity and authoritativeness of science and technology reports. In 1987, Xinhua News Agency reporter Li Xiguang conducted a survey of scientists attending the Third World Academy of Sciences Conference in Beijing and found that 80% of Chinese scientists believed that among various news media in China, Science Daily’s science and technology news reports were the most credible.

In 1988, Science Newspaper founded the first domestic science and technology news business magazine "Science and Technology Newsletter", which was edited, published and distributed in Changchun. In 1989, it was co-organized by China Science Newspaper and China Science and Technology Journalism Society. In 1990, it moved back to Beijing for editing and distribution, and was renamed "Science and Technology News and Writing".

1989~1998

In January 1989, with the approval of the Press and Publication Administration, "Science News" was renamed "China Science News".

On November 23, 1989, the newspaper’s preparations for laser phototypesetting were completed.

In 1990, "China Science News" took the lead in launching a special discussion on the reform of the science and technology system, which aroused strong repercussions in the science and technology community and attracted the attention of Song Jian, State Councilor and Director of the National Science and Technology Commission, who made a Important instructions. With the approval of the Ministry of Economy and Trade, China Science Newspaper held a cross-strait science and technology cooperation project negotiation meeting in Xiamen on December 12, 1991. With the approval of the Press and Publication Administration, "China Science News" will be changed from Tuesday to Wednesday from January 1993.

This report and the ensuing special discussion on scientific ethics were rated as one of the top ten science and technology news in 1993 by academicians of the two academies.

With the approval of the State Press and Publication Administration, "China Science News Overseas Edition" was officially released to the public at home and abroad on July 1, 1993. The overseas version of Chinese character printing, with a monthly issue of 8 pages, is supervised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ External Publicity Leading Group. Its main readers are Chinese students studying abroad, visiting scholars, Chinese scientists and Chinese entrepreneurs. Its circulation covers more than 30 countries and regions. In the second half of 1993, "China Science News" took the lead in conducting a discussion on "How to treat scientific and technological personnel working in the mountains and seas". The scientific community has different views on how to view achievement appraisal and establish a scientific evaluation system that is consistent with my country's national conditions. Starting from November 12, 1993, "China Science News" opened a column on the first page to discuss "Achievements Review and Appraisal". On September 10, 1994, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Science and Technology Commission, the State Education Commission, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China jointly issued a document recommending subscriptions to the "China Science News" nationwide. . On June 23, 1995, our newspaper’s commentator article “It is Obligatory to Safeguard the Dignity of Science” (written by Huang Anwen and revised by Li Shi) won the second prize of the 1994 China News Award.

In October 1995, "China Science News" launched a discussion on the topic "Why does my country miss the Nobel Prize?". Some experts and scholars published more than a dozen articles on this issue, which aroused widespread concern in the society.

In May 1996, "China Science News" established a cooperative relationship with the American "Science" magazine, and published the "Science Express" column of "China Science News" in this world-famous science magazine. Important content is introduced to Chinese readers in a timely manner and is welcomed by the majority of scientific and technological workers.

From June to September 1996, Qian Weichang and more than 60 university presidents jointly recommended "China Science News" to the whole country. The "Network News" was established with the approval of the General Administration of Press and Publication, and is jointly sponsored by China Science Newspaper and the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In October 1998, the first Party Committee and Discipline Inspection Commission of China Science Newspaper were established.

On October 29, 1998, the Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the change of name of China Science Newspaper to the News and Communication Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The renamed Chinese Academy of Sciences News and Communication Center is still a public institution of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is responsible for the centralized management of the Chinese Academy of Sciences news media.
