Researcher Hu Zheng has been engaged in the design and development of submersible for a long time, serving as the deputy director and deputy chief designer of the 7000m manned submersible project and the deputy director of the Jiaolong manned submersible1000m, 3000m and 5000m sea trial project. The achievements of the "Jiaolong" manned submersible have been widely reported by major media, which has produced great influence and good social benefits at home and abroad. 199 1 I graduated from my university (Central South University of Technology, now South China University) and was assigned to 702 University. I just joined the work and just want to be a qualified scientific research worker. At that time, the state invested less in the ocean, and the conditions for engaging in marine scientific research were still very difficult, so it was difficult to implement a scientific research project.

I dream whether I can take part in a big project like Jiaolong, a big project that is famous all over the country. By 2002, the project was finally completed. During the ten years from 199 1 to 2002, some people chose to leave their marine scientific research posts, while others chose to endure loneliness. I'm glad I waited.

The development of Xiaolong is not easy. Like our shipbuilding industry, we need a reference object and a female model when designing. When I started the Xiaolong project, I didn't have any information at hand, and I could only see the shapes of some foreign submersibles. It is one thing to look at an airplane and its appearance. You want to design a plane, that's another matter. Many devices, even ordinary devices, need a lot of time to be integrated to form deep-sea pressure resistance or realize the performance of manned submersible. For example, Jiaolong has a buoyancy control system, which can increase or decrease the buoyancy of the submersible with the change of seawater density. This set of things has never been seen in China. We also refer to some foreign materials. We independently design and tackle the key problems of valve components by ourselves. This valve and this system have been debugged for more than three years.

Everyone is most worried about safety. Submersible technology must achieve at least one goal, that is, go down and get up.

Anyway, it should be able to come up. We have made a particularly strict design for this. First of all, the safety factor of the design cabin is 1.5 times of the reference, that is, the compression resistance must reach the depth of 1 10,000 meters. Its equipment and sealing structure are all 10,000 meters. The second is the monitoring method in the process of diving, which must be kept in the monitoring state at all times and returned immediately if there is any problem. The worst accident must be losing power. If the power supply fails completely, the communication position of the submersible is unknown, and the contact with the mother ship is lost, which may mean sinking to the bottom of the sea forever. This situation is not allowed to happen.

In Mariana Trench, we dived more than 7,000 meters three times and walked along the trench, and found many special seabed ecological and geological environments. We plan to return to 7000 meters in the next two to three years.
