How about the editor at the publishing house? Can anyone tell me?
1. Publishing is a very marginal industry. If you want to make a lot of money or become a high official, it is recommended not to come. However, if you are interested in writing work or long for a peaceful and relaxed life, I suggest you consider it.
2. Treatment. The salary for temporary recruitment editors is indeed low, and the work pressure is high. But if there is a formal establishment, it is still possible. I work as an editor in a medium-sized publishing house. I have a public establishment, and my unit handles everything including household registration, and can provide housing with very cheap rent (300 a month). I have been working for three years, and my monthly salary is close to 4K, and I have a provident fund of just over 2K per month. The annual year-end bonus is also around 30,000 to 40,000. Personally, I feel that the treatment in Beijing is medium, not low.
3. Preparation. This is critical. Unfortunately, with the high-profile and strict requirements for the restructuring of the General Administration, publishing houses are moving towards corporate development. There are fewer and fewer publishing houses with business establishments. Our publishing house has also not been allocated quotas for entering Beijing since last year. Therefore, you should ask this clearly when applying for a job.
4. Work content. Most publishing houses require new editors to do text work, read manuscripts, edit manuscripts, check for errors, contact layout designers, etc.
After a few years, you will gradually be asked to find authors, contact manuscripts, and work independently - feeling like a director of a film and television crew. At that time, you will be responsible for the effectiveness of your project. Our publishing house is one of the few that has strict requirements for new editors. As soon as they join, they must be responsible for the entire process and be responsible for the efficiency of the books they edit. Of course text editing is easy, but overall editing is a bit more stressful.
5. Future. Objectively speaking, most publishing houses in Beijing are linked to ministries and commissions, and most young editors use publishing houses as a springboard to gradually transfer to higher-level units in charge. Editors from local publishing houses have also been transferred to the propaganda department. Whether the transfer can be successful depends on your personal ability. Of course, if you want to be an editor all your life, gradually being promoted to director or editor-in-chief is also a path.
6. Special attention: The publishing industry is open to private capital, so there are many book companies or cultural companies in the society. Their work content is almost the same as that of publishers, except that they do not have publishing rights (that is, they do not have ISBNs). The working pressure of cultural companies is generally higher than that of publishing houses. The treatment varies greatly. The editors of a few successful cultural companies have better treatment than many publishing houses, and they can learn a lot, which is very beneficial to personal growth. Of course, editors at most cultural companies are treated poorly.
