Why don’t some hospitals treat children at night?
Because there is a shortage of pediatricians, there are not enough. The "White Paper on the Current Situation of Pediatric Resources in China" estimates that the total number of pediatricians in the country is: 135,524 (generalized pediatricians, including pediatric internal medicine, pediatric health care, pediatric surgery, pediatric eye, pediatric otolaryngology-head and neck, pediatric skin, pediatric oral cavity , pediatric radiation, pediatric ultrasound, pediatric anesthesia). Currently, there are only 0.53 pediatricians per 1,000 children in my country. According to the United States standard of 1.46 physicians per 1,000 children, the shortage of pediatricians in my country is at least 200,000. Sun Kun, deputy chairman of the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and president of the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, pointed out that after the "universal two-child policy" is liberalized, it is predicted that the number of children in my country will reach 292 million in 2020; if we want to achieve "0.69 pediatricians per thousand "children" target, the shortage of pediatricians in China is 86,042.
The 2014 "China Health and Family Planning Statistical Yearbook" and relevant data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that as of 2013, the number of people who have obtained practicing (assistant) physician qualification certificates nationwide is about 2.8 million, and pediatrics only accounts for 3.9% (about 109,000 people), while my country’s children aged 0 to 14 years old 2. 2.3 billion, accounting for 16.4% of the total population, with an average of 4.0 per 10,000 children. There are 9 pediatricians. Compared with the 20.5 practicing (assistant) doctors per 10,000 people in my country during the same period, the number of pediatricians is obviously insufficient. In 2013, the number of pediatric outpatient and emergency services in my country's medical and health institutions accounted for 9.63% of all departments, with about 440 million visits, while the proportion of pediatric practicing (assistant) physicians was only 3.9% (about 110,000 people). The annual number of pediatric outpatient and emergency visits in my country was 471 million. Accounting for 9.84% of the country’s total outpatient and emergency visits; nearly 21.62 million people were discharged, accounting for 10.3% of the total number of discharges from medical institutions. The average daily number of outpatient visits handled by pediatricians in my country's medical institutions is about 17, which is 2.4 times the workload of other doctors in medical institutions; the average number of discharges handled by pediatricians per year is nearly 200, which is 2.6 times that of other doctors. As of January 2016, the recruitment demand for pediatricians has increased by 18% year-on-year, with "Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou" increasing by 19%, 23% and 18% year-on-year respectively. Second-tier major regions saw a year-on-year increase of 22%.
