What qualifications and subjects do senior chemists in the Forensic Department of Hong Kong Laboratory need?

Basic entry requirements for the rank of Chemist:

1. Hold a first-class or second-class honorary degree in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic medicine issued by a local university, or have an equivalent education, hold a master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensic medicine, food science or environmental science issued by a local university, or have an equivalent education.

2. Or hold a first-class or second-class honorary degree in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic medicine issued by a local university, or have an equivalent education, and have two years of relevant work experience after graduation.

Basic entry requirements for Technician II of the Government Laboratory:

1. holds a diploma in chemical technology from Hong Kong Polytechnic/Polytechnic University or Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education/Institute of Technology/Institute of Technology, or equivalent.

2. Meet the language proficiency requirements, and have obtained Grade 2 or above in China Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, or equivalent.

With effect from August 8, 2007, when the government appoints civil servants, the C and E grades of China Language and English Language (Course B) in HKCEE will be regarded as the C and E grades of China Language and English Language in HKCEE in 2007 respectively.

The bachelor's degree held by the applicant must be mainly in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic medicine, that is, two-thirds of the credits or papers completed must be in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic medicine.
