On Social Prejudice of College Students' Employment
If finding a job is a battle that requires graduates to pay considerable efforts and costs, it is tantamount to a cruel hand-to-hand combat for college students with humble origins.
I looked up the employment statistics of some college graduates, and according to my personal experience, I think the data provided by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) is close to the truth (the statistics of many departments are often contradictory and suspicious). The data shows that 200 1, 50% of college students have not found their husband's family; In 2002, there were 348,000 unemployed college students in China. In 2003, the employment rate of college graduates in China fell below the lowest point, and only 30% of them were "temporarily successful in employment".
It can be seen that in such a fierce battle, there are really not many college students who can survive by luck, and some even have no employment for a year or two. Take the college class I graduated from as an example. More than 30 junior college students are mostly from rural areas. Three years later, only three or four people have a good employment situation. Most of the others are temporary jobs, constantly changing jobs, and life is basically in the life stage. The money they earn is only enough for their daily expenses and renting expenses, and the money saved is only enough to find another job. Suffering from the chilling cold reception in the job market, the starting point for junior college students to find jobs after graduation is already quite low, and the future development is naturally a problem.
I understand the original intention and motivation of "more talents, faster talents and better talents" in university education, but I am very skeptical about its direction. Undergraduate education should focus on cultivating theoretical research-oriented talents, while junior college should focus on cultivating applied technical talents, which is the fundamental difference between undergraduate education and junior college education.
From the perspective of talent types, this should be a pyramid-shaped platform. Doctoral students, graduate students and undergraduates are located at the top of the tower, followed by junior college students, vocational high school students and secondary school students. There should be fewer people going up. What society generally needs is applied and practical talents, because there can't be so many talents engaged in research. Judging from the proportion of college students' enrollment and undergraduate students' enrollment in China, the proportion of undergraduate students and junior college students is seriously unbalanced, and the number of undergraduate students and junior college students is almost the same. In many other countries, the proportion of junior college students is much larger than that of undergraduates, and it is even easier for them to find jobs than undergraduates.
What is the employment situation of college students in China? One example after another shows that the employment rate of junior college students cannot be compared with that of undergraduates. On the contrary, college students who are unemployed after graduation can be seen everywhere. Another fait accompli is that many people who pursue higher education are not doing research, but just want to increase their bargaining chips when looking for a job, which is a great waste of national educational resources and human resources.
There is another question worth pondering: What is the difference between the abilities of college graduates and undergraduates in China? Experts usually say that college graduates lack both breadth and depth of knowledge and skilled professional skills. I don't deny it, but it's just a phenomenon, not the root cause. What I want to ask is, what caused the lack of knowledge depth and professional skills proficiency of junior college students?
Today, with the industrialization of education, many universities are expanding their enrollment, but they have not seriously considered the fundamental difference between junior college and undergraduate course. In the mode of training, the specialty is often just a simple compression of the content and hours of undergraduate majors. In many universities, the courses and textbooks offered by junior college students and undergraduates with the same major in the first two and a half years are exactly the same. Usually, professional courses and public courses are taken together, and even the test papers are the same. The only difference is that undergraduates added three or four courses in the first half of graduation, five months more than junior college students. The so-called breadth of knowledge is here, but the depth of knowledge is questionable. Anyone with a little knowledge knows that it is not easy to learn three or four courses in five months.
Everyone who has been to college knows that crosstalk is the most commonly used method for university teachers to give lectures, but what about crosstalk? Just pick out the key points in the course (also the key points in the exam) and talk about them, then everyone will go back and watch them themselves, and then the exam will be held. It can be seen that the ability difference between junior college students and undergraduate students is actually not great, but it is this short five months that has caused the difference in treatment between undergraduate students and junior college students when looking for a job!
When looking for a job, there is no denying the fact that no matter how poor your ability is, a bachelor's degree is a threshold, and nothing is impossible. There are still some sayings in the education department, such as finding a job first and then choosing a job, and you can't continue your studies with a diploma. However, the actual situation is that college students who are barely employed are still looking for jobs and changing jobs, which is not necessarily beneficial to their personal development, but also a headache for employers. However, junior college students are faced with index restrictions, and the graduate school has stricter regulations (for example, the postgraduate entrance examination basically stipulates that junior college students must work for two years, try several professional courses, and must not enter the exam across majors, and must be at the core).
In my opinion, these statements are putting the cart before the horse, avoiding the most fundamental problems and complicating simple problems. The complete separation between theory and practice in education directly leads to the difficulties for junior college students to find jobs in the future, which is also the reason why junior college students can't find all sources of work. Solving the drawbacks of the education system is the fundamental way to solve the problem of college students' adventure island. Otherwise, all discussions about how to solve employment temporarily are nonsense!
Nowadays, almost without exception, employers claim not to recruit junior college students, even in quite remote and underdeveloped places. Are there really many junior college students in China? Since there are so many college students, why does the country keep expanding its enrollment? In fact, the proportion of college students in China's national population is quite small, and China urgently needs a large number of university-level talents with certain practical ability and skills, which is the reason for the expanding enrollment scale.
Another major problem here is that many domestic employers do not choose talents according to the actual needs of their posts, but blindly compare with each other. All positions that junior college students are qualified for have to recruit graduates with bachelor degree or above. Government agencies, institutions, state-owned enterprises and many private enterprises have not really considered how to use talents effectively from the perspective of market economy, and have not included the use of talents in their cost accounting, so there is widespread waste in the use of talents. Government agencies at all levels, even at the street and township levels, need a bachelor's degree as long as they are recruited, and many university administrative agencies, including logistics managers, need a bachelor's degree or above, which leads to high consumption of talents.
Some enterprises, especially township enterprises, do not attract talents from the long-term development of enterprises, but are short-sighted and eager for quick success, or recruit some retired technicians or hire some wage earners and women workers at low prices. In some economically underdeveloped places, people with high academic qualifications are not used to make the best use of their talents (they also do not have this condition), but to improve themselves and decorate their windows. Due to various reasons, there are all kinds of discrimination against junior college students in society, which makes the employment path of junior college students difficult and thorny, and therefore suffers a cold shoulder. No wonder someone said with resentment and helplessness: "Specialist status is the word engraved on my face".
It is often seen that some experts say that college students have too high expectations for finding jobs and are unwilling to work in rural areas, factories and mines. It is really "easier said than done". In fact, in today's increasingly fierce job competition, the requirements and standards for junior college students to find jobs are declining again. Many junior college students only work to meet normal daily expenses, that is, to support themselves without worrying about their parents and stay away from their future development. Don't complain that junior college students don't want to go to grass-roots units such as rural factories and mines. Can a junior college student develop well in such a rural environment that all the children at home go out to work now? Can the poor wages of factories and mines recover the investment their parents have made in their education for more than ten years?
The current personnel system and household registration management also limit the employment of college students, and these restrictions are helpless. College graduates often have to consider whether there is any hope of returning to big cities after going, and what to do with their children's future study and employment. Judging from the current household registration management system, once the household registration falls to the grassroots level, it will undoubtedly be difficult to change in the future. Almost all the college students I know stay in the city, and most of them come from the countryside. Because they know the countryside, they don't want to go back to the countryside. Although they are in an awkward position in big cities, they still enjoy it, because the city's job resources and relatively relaxed employment conditions are more conducive to their professional and goal development. Here, they can at least see some hope.
For example, in Wuhan, the city where I live, I recently saw a very exciting news, which is the admission system for college graduates. In fact, junior college students' pursuit of equal treatment when looking for a job is not the pursuit of equal results, but the pursuit of equal starting point and equal rules of the game, and they pay the price of learning and competition. Under the premise of market economy, the discriminatory behavior of employers against junior college students obviously violates the principle of fairness, which leads to their narrower employment path.
College students, where is your way? I really want to say something to the junior college students with the same education as me. God is dead, but we still have to live and hope to live better. Although junior college students are in an embarrassing living environment, we must save ourselves and strengthen ourselves for personal future development. At any time, survival is not a very difficult thing for anyone. What is really difficult is personal development, that is, the future.
Under the severe employment situation, the jobs that junior college students find are often far from their majors and original intentions, and the purpose of work is only to make money, but junior college students should not give up and strive for a higher starting point every time they change jobs. On the surface, the idea of starting from the grassroots and slowly climbing up is correct, but the reality is that the scene seen from the bottom is not very bright and inspiring, but it will stifle a person's initiative. Many people who start from the grassroots never try to raise their heads and let fate see them, so they always stay at the bottom. Therefore, many college students give up their ideals and drown in the bottom torrent of life.
An important inference of Peter's principle is that the lower the position, the fiercer the struggle, the less opportunities and the greater the consumption of people. The higher the position, the easier it is for people. Therefore, college students should try their best to take the first step or two from the grassroots level when looking for a job, so as to avoid the torture of local ruffians and rogues, especially the low-level competition, and avoid forming narrow-minded and pessimistic arguments. I am deeply touched by this. After working for two years, I once jumped ship and went to a company for an interview. The recruiter mentioned that everyone can write down their salary requirements. I did not hesitate to fill in my expected salary and benefits, but none of the other seven college students who came to interview with me dared to write down their salary requirements. Some even told the person in charge with a flattering smile that as long as they were hired, the salary would be good.
I talked to others about the treatment I asked for, and they all said that I asked too much. In fact, my previous income must be much higher than what I wrote, but I can't fill it in because my job has changed and I can't start again. In my opinion, the lower income is actually very high in their eyes, and they even dare not fill in their own requirements. I feel sad, but I also understand them, because they don't see any encouraging scenes in their life circle. All they ask is to meet the most basic survival, but how can they let the employer hire you because they are so insecure? Even if hired, how can we talk about development?
One of my colleagues (also a junior college student) works in a famous foreign company and earns a lot of money. He is very confident. When he talked to me about his job-hunting experience, he said that the company also said that he wanted to recruit a bachelor degree or above, but he found that two of the five conditions for recruitment were suitable for him, and he had work experience in this field, so he submitted his resume and was hired. Confidence plays a big role here. It can be seen that college students should never be discouraged because of their low academic qualifications, lose confidence because they can't find a job once or twice (although finding a job is the most frustrating time), and don't be content with the status quo because of the bleak life. As long as you work hard, you still have a chance. When you stand at a higher height than before, you will find that your career path is getting wider and wider.
