Anhui Daily: Woodworking wages "kill" white-collar workers, why?
At the same time, many college graduates are still worried about not finding jobs. According to the latest data released by the human resources and social security department of Hefei, 654.38 million college graduates will apply for jobs in Hefei this year, 30,000 more than last year. By employing college graduates to work in villages and developing grass-roots public welfare posts, the city has led the vast tide of college students' job hunting to the grass-roots "capillaries" with stronger absorption capacity, thus alleviating the employment pressure. This sharp contrast shows the world the structural contradiction between supply and demand in the labor market in a way beyond people's usual cognition. This is actually a corrective signal from the labor market itself. From the shortage of skilled workers in the early years to the shortage of skilled workers and ordinary workers in the labor market now, of course, it is related to the fact that skills training can't keep up with the pace of demand, but the fundamental reason is that the contribution of such jobs is not commensurate with the returns they get in the state of seemingly unlimited supply in the previous labor market, resulting in a large number of workers leaving such jobs collectively from the day they choose to work, and this trend has continued to this day. The deeper root is that the deviation between the job-hunting will of the whole society and the social demand is deepening. There are many reasons for this deviation: first, the popularization of higher education has increased the opportunity to choose to engage in mental work and strengthened the ambition of more people to choose mental work. Secondly, the existence of a large number of only children makes families willing to concentrate enough energy and financial resources to bear the cost of letting their children enter the field of mental work. Third, the general improvement of economic conditions has also enabled many families to pay for higher education and training. This deviation is actually a manifestation of the overall progress of society. However, due to the huge inertia of the economic structure based on the "demographic dividend" of relying on low cost and sufficient supply of labor, it is reflected in the supply and demand of the labor market, showing the structural imbalance of current employment. Woodworking wages kill white-collar workers, indicating that the labor force has begun to adjust the increasing "scissors gap" in the supply of two kinds of labor with the price signal of "brain upside down": the number of mental workers is expanding, while the number of manual workers is shrinking rapidly. This signal has begun to have a significant impact on the labor supply: in a survey on the phenomenon of giving up the college entrance examination, 56.8% of the respondents chose "it is difficult to find a job, and it is useless to go to college". We should follow the trend of the market itself as a corrective mechanism. From the perspective of labor supply, it is necessary to conduct more targeted training and education for people who choose to engage in general workers or technicians in response to price signals in order to comprehensively improve the quality of workers. At the macro employment policy level, it is necessary to continuously improve the treatment level of manual workers, improve various social security systems as soon as possible, and realize the equalization of the basic rights and interests of all workers. Many enterprises do not seem to adapt to this trend, generally complaining about the high cost of labor, and calling for relaxing the social security policy to reduce enterprise costs. This trend seems to be affecting some decision-making departments, leading to more policy measures aimed at improving the situation of manual workers, such as raising the minimum wage, which have been resisted explicitly or implicitly. This understanding of causal inversion must be abandoned in time. Only by allowing manual workers and mental workers to live with dignity can we fundamentally reverse the imbalance in the labor market.
