Tang Jun: I can succeed, why can’t you
Introduction: What is the secret of your success? Tang Jun gave a concise answer: simplicity and diligence. Be a simple person and be diligent in your work. This is the core ingredient of my torch. Below are the stories of inspiring people that I searched and compiled for everyone. Welcome to read and read! I hope it can be helpful to everyone!
April 15, 2008, Beijing Hotel. Join the press conference of Xinhuadu Group. More than two hundred media gathered together. Chen Fashu, chairman of New Huadu Group, held the letter of appointment. Shanda, where I previously worked, also sent representatives to congratulate me. Familiar red carpets, familiar flashlights, familiar faces of media friends.
In my previous career, I have experienced countless large and small press conferences on behalf of the companies I work for. There were two press conferences in which I was the protagonist. In March 2002, I became the president of Microsoft China. In February 2004, I left Microsoft as the lifetime honorary president and became the president of Shanda. It was an unforgettable moment in my career. . Therefore, I am by no means unfamiliar with such scenes. Today, though, the meaning is different. Because this press conference is held in my personal name.
Today belongs to me.
Every email, text message, and phone call that I sent out the invitation was made by myself. The media reporters who came here are all my friends, and I can call most of them by name. Among these media friends, many of them followed me during my four years at Shanda. Many of them interviewed me five years ago when I was the president of Microsoft China. Some even interviewed me ten years ago. They started following me when I first returned to China to establish the Microsoft Greater China Technical Support Center a few years ago. Today is not a press conference, but a gathering of friends. I have always thought so.
"I had trouble sleeping last night."
This is how my opening remarks began. This is by no means the first thing I should say in such a formal and grand press conference, but it came very naturally to me. This is a confession to the friends in the audience who have cared about me for many years, and it seems to be what I have to say at this moment in my life of more than 40 years.
These media friends present should be familiar with my official resume:
Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1962.
In 1980, he was admitted to Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications.
In 1985, he went to Japan to study at Nagoya University for 5 years.
In 1990, he went to the United States to continue his study abroad career and obtained a doctorate in computer science. During this period, he started his own business and founded 3 companies.
In 1994, he joined Microsoft and has served as senior manager of the Windows NT development department at Microsoft headquarters since 1995.
In 1997, he returned to China to prepare for the establishment of the Microsoft Greater China Technical Support Center (ie Microsoft Shanghai) in Shanghai and served as general manager. In the next four years, the center was upgraded to Microsoft Asia Technology Center and Microsoft Global Technology Center.
In March 2002, he served as the president of Microsoft China and was awarded the lifetime honorary president of Microsoft China.
In February 2004, he joined Shanda Company as president.
In April 2008, he resigned as president of Shanda Network. Until today, he joined Xinhuadu Group as president and CEO.
Behind such a rich and exciting resume, there are naturally many exciting moments of success: On the day I took a plane overseas for the first time, I got up at 4 a.m. because I could not control my excitement. bed. After coming to the United States from Japan, he invented the popular karaoke counter, and the patent was bought out by Samsung for $80,000, thus earning him the first pot of gold in his career. Eight months after joining Microsoft, he was promoted to senior manager for proposing a new model for Windows multi-language version development system. At a Microsoft new product launch in Tokyo, I had the opportunity to interview Bill Gates for the first time. I told my story of struggle in three minutes, and Gates couldn't help but be moved.
In 2002, I came to Atlanta to attend Microsoft's global summit meeting with 10,000 people. I was surprised to find that the management concept I proposed—"Making Others Great"—had become the theme of the conference, and it has since become Microsoft's recognized corporate culture. On my 40th birthday after becoming the president of Microsoft China, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer personally congratulated me on my birthday and called me "a great person." After leading Shanda to successfully land on the Nasdaq market, Chen Tianqiao held a celebration party for me. It was the first time that I, who had been keeping a low profile since entering Shanda, delivered a high-spirited speech in front of Shanda's management. I returned to Microsoft headquarters as the president of Shanda Company and negotiated cooperation with Bill Gates and Masayoshi Son. Gates highly recognized my unique understanding of the Internet industry and even tactfully suggested that I return to Microsoft in person... Last night , all these scenes are like lightning, passing before my eyes when I can't sleep.
But as I tossed and turned, what I recalled more was not the successful moments in my life journey, but the unforgettable failures or setbacks, and even the details of them came one after another: 2005 From the end of the year to the beginning of 2006, it was the most difficult time for me at Shanda and even in my career. At that time, Shanda was in a very depressed state, employees began to have doubts about the future, and the media also talked about Shanda's decline. Shanda's stock price fell to 12 US dollars, and my option price was 11 US dollars, which was basically worthless. The media questioned why I hadn’t left Shanda yet and whether I had nowhere to go. My parents in the United States called me and said: Come back to the United States. You are not a boss and you are not short of money. Is it necessary that you still suffer so much injustice? I can't help but ask myself again and again: Who am I? Am I not suffering? Why am I suffering?
In August 2003, without warning, Microsoft headquarters suddenly made personnel changes in Greater China. Chen Yongzheng, the former president of Motorola China, was parachuted into Microsoft. . He then reset the management structure of Microsoft China and brought the biggest pieces of the "cake" such as marketing and finance under his direct management. The media became extremely lively, and I became the center of attention that I never wanted to be. My career requires me to remain silent to ensure that the company's image and interests are not damaged. Regarding the future of the company, Chen Yongzheng and myself, I can only keep silent. While under tremendous psychological pressure, I thought hard: How can I change the status quo and regain my passion?
At the end of 1994, I made up my mind to give up the three small companies I founded in Los Angeles. , joined Microsoft as an ordinary programmer. When I went to the Microsoft headquarters in Seattle for an interview, I fantasized about the scene where I and Bill Gates would have a great conversation after joining Microsoft. When I told the hiring manager in the Microsoft Human Resources Department that I wanted to meet Gates after the interview, he looked like he was an alien. They looked at me and told me it was impossible. The first time I saw Gates in person was at an annual staff meeting held in a huge stadium. I was sitting among tens of thousands of colleagues and saw him from a few hundred meters away. That was the most difficult transition period in my early career. As a newcomer, I couldn't compare to my colleagues at work. Every weekend, I studied Windows technical books in the office, and at the same time thought almost desperately: Will I never be able to get ahead in Microsoft, where talented people gather together?
1984 In 2004, when I was a senior in college, I decided to change my major and take the postgraduate entrance examination in order to obtain the qualifications for government-sponsored study abroad. After nearly a year of hard work, I got the first postgraduate entrance examination score in the school. Just when I thought there was no problem with the number of students studying abroad, I couldn't find my name in the notice announcing the list of students studying abroad. When I came to the graduate school, the teacher there told me that because I had not been awarded the title of "Three Excellent Students" during college, I could not go abroad according to regulations. This is all because in the first three years of college, I was arrogant, indifferent, had no sense of teamwork, and lacked communication skills, so I was not recognized by my teachers and classmates at all.
After the negotiations with the school were completely ineffective, I was heartbroken and regretful. Could it be that my future was ruined in my own hands?
Why on the eve of this important turning point in my career, I was so sad about the difficult time. There are far more memories than the taste of glorious moments? Maybe it’s because I am a very ordinary and simple person. I have no adventures in my life, and I have never taken any shortcuts. In my opinion, success is gratifying, but failures and setbacks are more unforgettable. The truly successful people are those who can overcome failures and setbacks.
It was during this sleepless night that I first seriously came up with the idea of ??writing a book. In this book, I hope to share my experience of overcoming failures and setbacks with readers through my own life experiences and my reflections on these experiences.
After graduating from college, I studied abroad in Japan and the United States. I stayed in school for a long time, so I have a strong campus complex. After becoming a professional manager, the thing I did most in my spare time was give speeches to college students. Students and friends often come to me and ask me, "I don't know where my future is and I am confused about the direction of my life." When I returned to China to lead Microsoft in Shanghai, many of my employees were young people who had just entered the workplace. They regarded me as a father, eager to get help from me, and even hoped that I would guide them in their life paths. In fact, the 15-year-old me, the 25-year-old me, and even the 35-year-old me are just as confused, hesitant and confused? Therefore, the readers of this book are those who have the same desire for success as me, but can’t find the way to success. friends.
I am a person who is born with passion and I particularly value passion. A successful life does require passion, but it also requires the skills to control and maintain passion. If life is a long-distance race, passion is like fire. We need to use a high-quality torch to go through wind and rain, frost and snow, and protect the fire to the end. I hope my book can help more friends find their own torch.
Many people ask me: What is the secret of your success? I can give a concise answer: simplicity and diligence. Be a simple person and be diligent in your work. This is the core ingredient of my torch.
Why do I say that my success can be replicated? That’s because the operation of everything in the world, from the universe to a flower and a fruit, actually follows some very simple rules. As long as you master these rules, you can continue to copy them, just like the kaleidoscope we played in childhood, creating colorful life content.
If I can succeed, why can’t you?
